A fuel injection control apparatus for an internal combustion engine is provided. A controller directs a fuel injector to spray a learning injection quantity of fuel and determines a resulting increase in speed of the engine. The controller determines the quantity of the fuel actually sprayed from the fuel injector based on the increase in speed of the engine and calculates a correction factor which compensates for a difference between the learning injection quantity and the actual injection quantity. The controller also determines a variation in load acting on a driving member of a torque transmission mechanism. When such a variation is great undesirably, the controller stops spraying the learning injection quantity. The controller may determine the increase in speed of the engine based on the degree of the variation in load. This ensures the accuracy in calculating the correction factor regardless of the variation in load.

A valve control device corrects a change rate of an opening degree of a valve in accordance with engine rotation speed when deposit elimination operation is performed. The valve control device corrects an inclination between a positive maximum opening degree and a negative maximum opening degree of the valve in accordance with the engine rotation speed when the deposit elimination operation is performed. Thus, when the engine rotation speed is low and a noise accompanying the deposit elimination operation becomes more audible, the change rate of the opening degree of the valve is reduced. As a result, the noise accompanying the deposit elimination operation is reduced and annoyance for vehicle occupants is reduced.

A charging current flowing through the piezo stack and a charging voltage applied to it may be measured during a charging process. A low pressure EGR system includes a low pressure EGR passage connecting a downstream portion of an exhaust gas cleaner disposed in an exhaust passage to an upstream portion of a supercharger compressor disposed in an intake passage. A device for trapping foreign particles contained in EGR gas to be recirculated is disposed in the low pressure EGR passage. The trapping device may be positioned lower than the passage connected thereto so that foreign particles drop into the device by their own weight. A cross-sectional area of the trapping device may be made larger than that of the passage so that the flow speed of the EGR gas is reduced in the trapping device and the foreign particles are easily trapped. A valve for closing the low pressure EGR passage may be disposed therein to stop EGR when malfunctions are detected in the exhaust gas cleaner or the supercharger.

The present invention performs an injection quantity learning process with only data acquired within a prescribed time. When the number of pieces of accumulated data reaches a prescribed count, a controller determines whether a time difference between when an oldest piece of data was acquired and when a latest piece of data was acquired is less than the prescribed time. When the difference is less than the prescribed time, the controller corrects a command quantity based on the prescribed number of pieces of data. According to this method, when the injection quantity is corrected, old data having been acquired before the prescribed time is discarded and the command quantity is corrected using only the prescribed number of pieces of data having acquired within the prescribed time, thereby enhancing learning accuracy.
