A magneto-optical head apparatus of a recording and/or reproducing apparatus includes a light beam generating unit, an objective lens, a separating optical element, a reflecting mirror, and a photodetector. The objective lens converges a light beam emitted from the light beam generating unit on a point on an optical axis, e.g., a point on the recording layer of a magneto-optical recording medium. The separating optical element deflects the light beam emitted from the light beam generating unit, and separates the light beam emitted from the light beam generating unit and a light beam through the objective lens. The reflecting mirror deflects the light beam emitted from the light beam generating unit and deflected by the separating optical element at 90.degree. so that the light beam is led to the objective lens. The photodetector receives the light beam irradiating through the objective lens and passing through the separating optical element. The light beam generating unit, the objective lens, the separating optical element and the photodetector are disposed so that the optical axis of the light beam emitted from the light beam generating unit, the optical axis extending from the separating optical element to the reflecting mirror, the optical axis from the reflecting mirror to the objective lens, and the optical axis from the separating optical element to the photodetector define the same plane.
