Water softening by a combination of electrodialysis and calcium carbonate precipitation. The hard feed water or alternatively recycled soft water is rendered alkaline and is then subjected to a treatment by which precipitation of calcium carbonate is induced. One way of bringing about such precipitation consists in passing the alkaline water across a cake of calcium carbonate crystals having a size not exceeding 100 microns, deposited on a filter and being in an at least fifty fold excess over the amount of calcium carbonate to be precipitated.

A virus having a lipid-containing capsid, such as AIDS virus, is inactivated by contacting the virus with an inactivating amount of phosphatidyl choline. Such a virus can be inactivated in fluids such as virus-contaminated body fluids or derivatives, e.g., blood or blood derivatives. The phosphatidyl choline can be present in an Active Lipid (AL) composition further comprising neutral lipids and phosphatidyl ethanolamine. Phosphatidyl choline, and an AL composition containing same, is useful for the treatment or prophylaxis of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in mammals.

There is provided a process for the selective anomeric deacetylation of sugar derivatives, which may be substituted by substituents such as acetoxy, chloracetoxy, alkoxy, azido, etc., by means of tin compounds R.sub.3 SnOR' or R.sub.2 SnO where R is lower alkyl resulting either directly in the desired anomeric compound or in an intermediate which is converted to the desired compound by silica or by acid hydrolysis.

The present invention relates to a novel system and method for the determination of depth profiling with improved accuracy and reliability. The method comprises obtaining spectroscopic data from the sample while under at least two different electrical conditions of the sample, the spectroscopic data comprising a signal of charged particles emitted from the sample, and being indicative of a change in amplitude, spectral position and spectral shape of the signal from the sample while under different electrical conditions of the sample, the change being indicative of the compositional profile and spatial distribution for at least one chemical element in the sample along a direction through the sample.

A film is presented having super-pyroelectric properties. The film comprises nano-sized grains being in a ferroelectric phase and having at least three different crystallographic variants defining at least two polycrystalline macro-domains. The film is shaped to define at least one film region with the macro-domains of a predetermined shape and different orientations of crystallographic axes with respect to the film's surface, thereby enabling to apply a temperature change to the film to induce movement of the polycrystalline macro-domains boundaries enabling super-pyroelectric properties.

A solar energy conversion system is presented. The system comprises at least one waveguide arrangement having at least one light input respectively. The waveguide arrangement comprises a core unit for passing input solar radiation therethrough and a cladding material arrangement interfacing with the core therealong. The cladding material arrangement is configured as an array of spaced-apart solar cells arranged along the core unit and having different optical absorption ranges, such that an interface between the waveguide core and the cladding arrangement spectrally splits the photons of the input solar radiation by causing the photons of different wavelengths, while passing through the core unit, to be successively absorbed and thereby converted into electricity by the successive solar cells of said array.
