摘要: A vector light sensor (VLS) includes a substrate and a sensor structure. The substrate includes a major surface. The sensor structure includes a pyramid structure, light-sensitive areas, and electrical contacts. The pyramid structure forms at least a portion of a body of the sensor structure and has predefined angles between the major surface of the substrate and a plurality of sidewalls of the pyramid. The light-sensitive areas are formed on two or more of the plurality of sidewalls of the pyramid structure. The electrical contacts are electrically coupled to the light-sensitive areas. Information about the information about intensity and direction of an incident light beam can be extracted by comparing signals from two or more of the light-sensitive areas.

摘要: IR emission devices comprising an array of polaritonic IR emitters arranged on a substrate, where the emitters are coupled to a heater configured to provide heat to one or more of the emitters. When the emitters are heated, they produce an infrared emission that can be polarized and whose spectral emission range, emission wavelength, and/or emission linewidth can be tuned by the polaritonic material used to form the elements of the array and/or by the size and/or shape of the emitters. The IR emission can be modulated by the induction of a strain into a ferroelectric, a change in the crystalline phase of a phase change material and/or by quickly applying and dissipating heat applied to the polaritonic nanostructure. The IR emission can be designed to be hidden in the thermal background so that it can be observed only under the appropriate filtering and/or demodulation conditions.

摘要: A multimodal and highly compact human presence detector that includes, on a same silicon chip made using CMOS technology, a first array of pixels, made sensitive to far-infrared radiation by depositing a pyroelectric layer, converting the received far-infrared radiation into electrical charges, juxtaposed with at least one second array of pixels sensitive to visible light, converting the received visible light into electrical charges, and a circuit for reading the charges generated in each of the arrays by the visible light or the far-infrared radiation, the detector further including, on top of the silicon chip, an optical element for focusing the far-infrared radiation on the first array, and an optical element for focusing the visible light on the second array.

摘要: Described herein is a method for altering the characteristics of a membrane comprising a dielectric material. The method comprises heating the membrane and applying an electric field in a direction out of the plane of the membrane to at least a portion of the dielectric material. At least a portion of the dielectric material becomes aligned with the applied electric field. In some embodiments, the membrane is piezoelectric and application of an electric signal to the membrane causes out of plane movement of the membrane. Also disclosed are membranes and systems and apparatuses comprising such membranes.

摘要: An infrared detector useful in, e.g., infrared cameras, includes a substrate having an array of infrared detectors and a readout integrated circuit interconnected with the array disposed on an upper surface thereof, for one or more embodiments. A generally planar window is spaced above the array, the window being substantially transparent to infrared light. A mesa is bonded to the window. The mesa has closed marginal side walls disposed between an outer periphery of a lower surface of the window and an outer periphery of the upper surface of the substrate and defines a closed cavity between the window and the array that encloses the array. A solder seal bonds the mesa to the substrate so as to seal the cavity.

摘要: An energy generator including a material having a Curie temperature is provided. The energy generator includes a hot source at a first temperature, a cold sink at a second temperature, a means to couple the hot source to the material while the cold sink is insulated from the material, and a means to couple the cold sink to the material while the hot source is insulated from the material, wherein: the first temperature higher than the Curie temperature, and the second temperature lower than the Curie temperature. Also provided is an energy generator including elements as above, between the hot source and the cold sink. Further provided is a genset having an engine for producing electrical energy, a coolant system, an exhaust element, and an alternator, and an energy generator as above. A method for use an energy generator as above is also provided.

摘要: A calorimeter with a heat sink that includes a diffusion-bonded block that has higher thermal conductivity laterally across the block than through the block. The diffusion-bonded block has multiple metallic layers that are diffusion-bonded together, with relatively higher thermal conductivity layers alternating with relatively lower thermal conductivity layers. The diffusion-bonded block may be used in differential scanning calorimeters, multi-cell differential scanning calorimeters, nano-differential scanning calorimeters and isothermal titration calorimeters, as well as other calorimeters that measure differential heat flow to and/or from a sample with respect to the heat flow to and/or from a reference.
