Abstract: A method and apparatus for dispensing and feeding to a workstation elongated articles which are vertically stackable and have a substantially common longitudinal dimension. Articles of different shape are sequentially dispensing from separate dispensers onto a common pathway and fed to the workstation along that pathway. Articles of each shape are dispensed onto the pathway from a group of articles all having that shape in common and the articles dispensed from all the groups are fed sequentially along the common pathway in a downstream direction to the workstation. The dispensers are arranged in tandem in the pathway direction to the workstation and each is positioned above the pathway and oriented to dispense elongated articles with their longitudinal directions transverse to the pathway direction. The dispensers may be positioned higher than the workstation and the pathway extending under them in the downstream direction to the location of the workstation so that the articles will slide down the pathway to the location of the workstation. A receiver at the end of the pathway receives articles and deposits the articles sequentially in a holder at the workstation extending transversely of the downstream direction of the pathway. The article dispensers have opposed end supports, each for receiving and supporting a respective longitudinal end of elongated articles, which are stacked in a vertical stack on the dispenser, and sequentially dispensing the articles by simultaneously releasing the ends of the bottom article while continuing to support the ends of the articles remaining in the stack.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for conveying articles, particularly articles such as containers, or bottles, having a neck portion with a neck ring thereon, along an article conveying path with the articles being urged along the article conveying path by article engaging members extending from a plurality of sections of an elongated movable member that extends from a guide along a guide path adjacent and horizontally offset from the article conveying path. The elongated movable member is preferably a chain having a plurality of links and article engagement preferably includes a flange that extends horizontally from each chain link into the article conveying path with adjacent flanges spaced from one another in the article conveying path whereby the chain links and flanges extending therefrom enable limited angular deviation of the chain during normal operation with the flanges engaging the lower edge of the neck ring of articles in the article conveying path so that the articles are urged along the article conveying path upon movement of the chain unit along the guide path.

Abstract: A side-loading rack for storing wheeled container chassis in a nearly vertical, slightly leaning position has a framework of dividers defining plural vertical slots open on one side for receiving a container chassis sideways in each slot. Each divider includes a chassis support arm which extends front to rear along an upper side of each slot. Wheel supports are mounted on the dividers in a lower part of each slot so that the wheels of a container chassis stored in the slot rest on the wheel support and against one divider and the chassis frame leans at a small angle from vertical against the chassis support arm of an adjacent divider. Corner castings are positioned at opposite ends of the rack so that it can be handled in the same manner as a container. The dividers are constructed with an upper portion, including the chassis support arms, either removable from or collapsible into the lower portion of the frame means to form a more compact structure for ease of handling.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for handling and orienting elongated articles (e.g., asparagus) having a center of gravity displaced from the geometric center in a direction away from the lighter and toward the heavier end thereof. Employs the principle of tilting articles about their centers of gravity, together with moving surfaces upon which the articles are supported. The articles are caused to tilt with their heavier ends foremost and drop through one or more gaps formed between moving surfaces.
