Systems and methods are described that facilitate correcting for paper process direction arrival errors during a print job in a marker module of a print engine. Paper sheet arrival time is determined at a first registration point in a print engine or marker module thereof, and an average arrival time is compared to an expected arrival time to determine whether the pages are arriving on time, early, or late. The arrival time error is used to generate or look up a correction factor, which is added to an expected arrival time at a second registration point in the marker module or print engine to generate an updated expected arrival time. Print engine control parameters (e.g., sheet feeder timing, toner application, paper path speed, etc.) are adjusted according to the updated expected arrival time at the second registration point.

The method utilizes the steps of: a. selecting a reference objective relating to a downstream operation, b. choosing at least one feedback device correlated to the reference objective, c. collecting process data from the at least one feedback device at different positions within a time-varying operation cycle for at least one operation cycle at a learning speed, d. calculating an error as the difference between the collected process data from step (c) and a reference signal related to the selected reference objective, e. generating a correction signal based upon the calculated error from step (d) and, f. applying the correction signal to the actuator during a succeeding time-varying operation cycle.

An image forming apparatus includes an image forming unit, a stacking unit, a first detection unit, a second detection unit, and a control unit. The image forming unit forms an image on a recording medium. The stacking unit stacks recording media on which images are formed. The first detection unit detects a conveyance interval between a trailing edge of a first recording medium and a leading edge of a second recording medium conveyed subsequent to the first recording medium conveyance. The second detection unit is disposed downstream of the first detection unit and detects the conveyance interval and detects whether an amount of recording media stacked on the stacking unit exceeds a predetermined amount. The control unit changes, according to a result of comparing detected conveyance intervals, conveyance timing of the second recording medium to widen the conveyance interval detected by the first detection unit.

The method further includes conveying the sheet on the transport path so that the sheet contacts the reference surface at one position of the set, engaging the probe with the sheet at the one position to determine a measured sheet thickness value, and adjusting the measured sheet thickness value based on the runout value for the one position to obtain an actual sheet thickness value.

A method of calibrating once-around and harmonic errors of encoded nips is provided. An encoder with an index pulse is used to measure the velocity and rotation of the driven wheel or idler. The geometry of the drive train and wheel and idler is chosen so that their once around and harmonic frequencies are unique such that no other drive errors will generate these frequencies. The method includes running the idler or wheel at substantially constant velocity for N revolutions. Each index triggers the collection of velocity data, which is averaged for N revolutions. This process detects drive train motion errors that are periodic with respect to the timing of the index pulse (i.e., once per revolution of the wheel or idler). Once the velocity errors have been measured, corrections are made. This method may be incorporated in xerographic machines as part of a setup or calibration procedure.

The drive shaft (18) is mounted, by one end (20), in a frame-mounted bearing (21) and, by its other end (62), in a displaceable bearing (64). Acting on the bearing (64) is a force sensor (70, 74, 76) which is intended for determining the pressing force of the stack of sheets (12) against the extracting rollers (16). The pressing force is controlled such that it always moves within a narrow middle range between a minimum and a maximum possible value.
