For a process for fracture separating the bearing cover of a multi-part bearing arrangement, particularly in crankcases of internal-combustion engines, by means of a half-mandrel in a bearing bore partially bounded by the bearing cover, for separating integrally constructed fastening flanges of the bearing cover from the remaining part of the bearing arrangement, it is suggested for producing fracture separating surfaces in planes sloping with respect to one another that the pairs of corresponding fracture separating surfaces of the bearing cover and the remaining part of the bearing arrangement are produced in separating areas which together enclose an obtuse angle (.alpha.) having a case-side vertex by at least one half-mandrel whose curvature radius, as a function of the respective obtuse angle (.alpha.), is selected to be by 0.5% to 5% smaller than the constant radius of the bore receiving the half-mandrel.

A lined bearing is made by tinning at least the radially inner surface of a bearing ring, providing an atmosphere of water vapour adjacent the tinned surface to which a flux is also supplied, and centrifugally casting on the lining material. Tinning can be achieved by applying a slurry of tin powder in a flux solution, e.g. an aqueous zinc chloride solution, followed by heating at least to a tinning temperature. Further flux solution can be sprayed onto the hot tinned surface in the centrifugal casting machine to form the desired atmosphere and to disperse the flux as fine particles. Quenching by spraying on cold water preferably commences immediately after casting of the white metal or other lining material begins.

A method of producing spline bearings for transmitting a rotational torque in which one member or a spline shaft produced by cutting and grinding is used as a core which is placed in the other member or a metallic mold adapted to mold by casting an outer race of a spline bearing. A molten alloy is poured in the cavity of the metallic mold in the form of the outer race of the spline bearing and allowed to cool and solidify so as to mold the outer race by casting. After being molded, the outer race is uniformly beaten to form a small clearance between the shaft and the outer race, so that a spline bearing of high precision can be produced.

The sliding bearing includes an outer cup-shaped thin metal bearing bush seated in the ends of a fork of the universal joint, and an inner sliding bush, of abrasion and oil resistant plastic composition material, embracing each pin of the universal joint, there being a predetermined clearance between the inner and outer bushes. The plastic inner bush is formed by pouring around a cylindrical core inserted into the outer bush. The plastic bush, when it sets, shrinks to disengage its outer surface from the inner surface of the outer bush, and has a gripping fit with the pin of the joint. In this embodiment also the outer bush has an in-turned flange at its open end.

A carbon-lined journal bearing is manufactured by forcing a solid carbon plug into a socket bore of a metal body after introducing a quantity of adhesive into the closed end of the socket bore. The bore allows clearance round the plug so that the adhesive becomes extruded through the gap to fill the latter completely. After setting of the adhesive the two end surfaces are re-machined, the carbon plug is bored conversion into a carbon liner, the machining of the end face adjacent to the closed end of the socket bore being continued to remove the closed end portion of the latter.
