A method of conserving energy during a heating event wherein a coolant is heated in a cooling system is disclosed. The method includes establishing a first set point temperature for a first point in the cooling system and establishing a second set point temperature lower than the first set point temperature for a second point in the cooling system. Normally, the coolant is maintained at the second set point temperature at the second set point in the cooling system. During the heating event, the second set point temperature is raised to substantially match the first set point temperature to reduce necessary heating of the coolant at the first point.

This cross member structure can define an advantageous air duct structure and effectively reinforce the automobile body structure at the same time by comprising a bulkhead in a substantially laterally central position of the cross member so as to divide the interior of the cross member into a first chamber for fresh air to be air conditioned and a second chamber for fresh air to be directly introduced into a passenger compartment, with the two chambers provided with individual air inlets and outlets. A funnel member which diverges upward and is disposed inside the cross member so as to extend between an upper member and a bottom member of the cross member can provide an advantageous air duct for defrosting or demisting the windshield and, additionally, can effectively reinforce the cross member structure.

A heater unit comprises a casing through which air flows in one direction from an inlet to outlets. A heater core is disposed within the casing for heating air passing therethrough. An air mix door is also disposed within the casing and has a pivotal end about which it is swingable for controlling the amount of air heated by the heater core and the amount of unheated air bypassing the same. In the above arrangement, air is difficult to pass through the heater core at a place adjacently behind the pivotal end of the air mix door whith respect to the direction of air flow.
