A wastegate valve is fluidly coupled with the exhaust manifold and movable between a first position in which exhaust fluid is allowed to bypass the first turbine and a second position in which fluid is restricted from bypassing. The airflow system includes a third conduit fluidly coupling the second compressor and the wastegate valve. The wastegate valve moves to the first position when compressed air in the third conduit has at least a predetermined pressure.

The burning of unburned fuel in an exhaust pipe is a technique for preventing a turbo lag. However, since the technique requires combustion in the exhaust pipe, the temperature in the exhaust pipe becomes high, which is likely to damage the exhaust pipe, cause the exhaust emissions to deteriorate. The present invention addresses this problem by providing an ignition control apparatus for an engine with a turbocharger, capable of adjusting an ignition timing and a turbocharger. When a throttle valve is opened rapidly, the ignition control apparatus causes the ignition timing to advance with respect to the ordinary ignition timing. Consequently, the start of combustion is advanced, and the speed of rotation of the engine is raised, thereby increasing the speed of an exhaust turbine to achieve the desired increase in engine performance, without the problems of conventional ignition control systems.

There is provided a system and method for using an engine's exhaust back pressure to control a variable geometry turbocharger. The control system determines a desired exhaust back pressure based on engine speed and engine load. The desired exhaust back pressure is compared with a measured exhaust back pressure to determine the difference between the measured and desired exhaust back pressures. The difference value is used to determine the duty cycle. In an alternate embodiment, the exhaust gas pressure is used to adjust the duty cycle determined by other operating parameters. A base duty cycle is determined from the engine speed and the engine load. The difference between the measured and desired exhaust back pressures is used to determine an exhaust pressure control duty cycle. The base duty cycle is then adjusted by the exhaust pressure control duty cycle to give a turbocharger duty cycle.

A wastegated turbocharger comprises a turbine wheel (5) mounted to a shaft (8) for rotation within a turbine housing (4), which is provided with a wastegate valve assembly 18. The pop-off valve includes a housing adapted for connection to a portion of a drive device containing a pressure medium. It also includes a pressure body movably disposed in the housing such that, in operation, a first side of the pressure body is exposed to the pressure medium while a second side is exposed to a reference force. In addition, the pop-off valve incorporates a control device adapted to receive at least one signal concerning at least one operating parameter of the drive device and, in response to the operating parameter signal, to control the reference force. As a result of movement of the pressure body within the housing, at least one first opening in the housing is exposed, permitting venting of the pressure medium.
