Abstract:
A heat stable bond between uncured urethane formulations and a rubber or synthetic rubber substrate is obtained by a method comprising coating the rubber surface with first a polyamine solution, then a peroxide solution and then a polyisocyanate-terminated monomer or prepolymer before applying the uncured urethane. While previously used bonds employing cyanoacrylate ester adhesives lose bond strength at elevated temperatures, the bond achieved in the present invention is stable throughout the operating temperature of the urethane.
Abstract:
A new method is provided to impart a hydrophilic lubriciious coating onto articles such as medical devices. A device, for example a catheter, is first contacted with a polyisocyanate solution, to provide coupling, then contacted with a poly(carboxylic acid) solution to give a coating, and is then finally oven dried. These coatings have lubricity that only becomes manifest upon exposure to water ro body fluids, and moreover, are also long lasting and have good abrasion resistance. This combination of properties is not available from other currently used or proposed coatings.
Abstract:
A shaped body formed of a synthetic organic polymer is surface-treated for increasing the surface energy by a spark discharge treatment which is preceded and/or followed by a treatment with a UV ray-absorbing organic liquid and/or a UV irradiation treatment.
Abstract:
A process for the deposition of a film of an electrophoretic resin upon the surface of a substrate which comprises the steps of (i) electrophoretically depositing from a bath comprising water, a water miscible organic solvent and the resin, a film of the uncured resin upon the surface of the substrate; (ii) immersing said film in a solution of a resin additive in a solvent medium comprising water and a water miscible organic solvent, the amount of said resin additive dissolved in said solvent medium being sufficient for the absorption into the resin film of sufficient additive to impart the desired property to the cured resin film, the composition of said solvent medium being such that the requisite amount of additive can be dissolved therein and such that said desired property is imparted to said resin film while immersed in said solvent medium without significant damage to the resin fim; and (iii) curing the resin.
Abstract:
An aqueous system for treating a film or coating containing water-dispersible polymeric material having water solubilizing sulfonate groups in its molecular structure, the system being effective for insolubilizing the sulfonate groups and enhancing the water resistance of the film, and having dispersed therein per 100 grams of water, from about 0.002 to about 0.5 gram-ion equivalents of a multivalent cation, and from about 0.1 to about 25.0 grams of water-dispersible polyurethane material, and preferably having a No. 2 Zahn cup viscosity of from about 15 to about 50 seconds.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for applying liquid acid to a treatment surface according to the teachings of the present invention is disclosed utilizing an acid pack formed in a preferred aspect by stencil cutting a supply stock of a layered assemblage including flexible, acid impervious material, pressure sensitive adhesive, and an adhesive covering. Specifically, a first stencil cut is made extending through the assemblage and a second stencil cut is simultaneously made extending through the adhesive covering while leaving the flexible material in tact dividing the adhesive covering into a central portion and a perimeter portion. The central portion of the adhesive covering is removable exposing the adhesive on the flexible, acid impervious material to allow securement of acid absorbing material thereto while the perimeter portion of the adhesive covering is maintained in a covering relation with the perimeter edge of the sheet for providing support for the flexible, acid impervious material. A pocket for receipt of the liquid acid is created by tightly sealing the perimeter edge of the sheet of flexible, acid impervious material to the treatment surface. The acid absorbing material absorbs the liquid acid and carries and uniformly spreads the liquid acid.
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a homogeneous, water-insoluble dye layer on a substrate is provided in which a solution of a cationic or anionic dye in an organic solvent is provided on the substrate, the solvent is removed and the resulting dye layer is treated with an aqueous solution of a salt in which the cation of the anionic dye is exchanged for the cation of the salt or is treated with a salt or acid in which the anion of the cationic dye is exchanged for the anion of the salt or acid. The invention also provides a substrate provided with water insoluble homogeneous dye layer.
Abstract:
A method of applying water-base paint in which a solvent which increases the viscosity of water-base paint is sprayed on the article to be painted before or after the application of the water-base paint, or at the same time as its application, or a paint compounded with a solvent which increases the viscosity of the water-base paint is sprayed on the article before or after the application of the water-base paint or at the same time that it is applied.
Abstract:
Blistering of a coating composition applied to a surface which is disposed adjacent to a body of water such as ocean salt water when the coating is applied is avoided by applying the coating composition to the surface while water is flowing over the surface.
Abstract:
A coating composition consisting essentially of certain heat-stable polymers, colorants, antioxidants, and liquid carrier useful for coating an article to produce a finish which is capable of maintaining its hue and having a decorative pattern produced within it is provided.
