The invention is in a conductive prepolymer composition which when polymerized and cured is used to coat a substrate material such as steel, stainless steel, iron, brass, copper, aluminum, platinum, titanium, silver, gold, Telfon, plastics, glass, or combinations thereof. It comprises: (a) from 25 to 99 parts by weight of a poly(amide-imide) prepolymer; (b) from 1 to 25 parts by weight of a trifunctional ester selected from the group consisting of trifunctional methacrylate ester, trifunctional acrylate ester, and mixtures thereof; (c) from 0.5 to 15 parts by weight of an organo-reactive silane consisting of an amino group containing alkoxysilane having the formula NH2(CH2)nSi(OC2H5)3, where n is an integer from 1 to 20; and (d) a conductive additive. The invention also provides polymer coated substrates having a tenaciously bound polymer layer which is corrosion resistant, has advantageous properties of conductivity and can be soldered.

Crosslinkable aqueous-based coating compositions are described which are covalently bonded to a wooden surface to which they are applied. The compositions contain a crosslinkable polymer, a mono and/or polyethylenically unsaturated monomer which can be graft polymerized onto cellulose molecules present in said wooden surface, a water soluble peroxy free radical polymerization catalyst, a source of cations capable of creating free radical sites in said cellulose molecules and, optionally, a crosslinking agent for said crosslinkable polymer. The coating may be air dried under ambient conditions to provide a crosslinked coating which is chemically bonded to the underlying wooden surface.

The invention relates to the coating of steel articles with organic polymeric material for the prevention of wear and corrosion. To obtain secure and permanent adhesion of the coating on the steel article the coating material is compounded so as to result in graft polymerization with the underlying steel face. Fillers may be included in the coating material for enhancing physical characteristics of strength, wear resistance etc., and a preferred coating material includes monomer having functional groups to interact both with the steel substrate and with the fillers. The coating material may be compounded so as to have flow characteristics, before curing, which permit a smooth and finished exposed face to be obtained, particularly on a rough or unfinished steel substrate surface. The coating process is particularly advantageous in the field of steel automative parts exposed to corrosive environments, for example ball studs.

A method is disclosed for protecting aluminum and aluminum alloys by the chemical bonding of a polymerized coating to the aluminum oxide on the aluminum surface. The protective coating is graft polymerized from a solution onto the aluminum in the presence of a small amount of silver ion as an initiator. A peroxide is present during the graft polymerization to regenerate silver ions and to catalyze polymerization of monomers and prepolymers which attach to the aluminum surface. The monomers are vinyl monomers containing one or more hydroxy, carboxy, glycidyl and aziridinyl groups. The prepolymers are polyurethane resins and aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic epoxy resins. The vinyl monomers and prepolymers are cross-linked to provide a transparent, impervious protective coating on the aluminum. The coated aluminum article made by the above method is also disclosed.

The filtration media includes an effective amount of at least one germicidal agent associated to monomers polmerized and chemically grafted and covalently bonded to the surface of the media. The germicidal filter media is prepared by contacting the media with a grafting solution comprising one or more monomers, a catalyst, a surface agent, a curign agent, at least one graft initiator, and at least on germicide and subsequently curing the media at an elevated temperature to chemically graft the polmerizable monomers onto a surface of the media and associate at least one germicide thereto. Filter media suitable for use in the present invention include ceramic spheroids, hollow glass spheres, polmeric type meida, thermoset coated glass spheres, and crystalline microporous materials, such as zeolites. The germicidal filter media is effective for deactivating, destroying and/or removing from a feed liquid, such as water, escherichia coli, salmonella choleraesuis, staphylococcus, aspergsillus, klebisiella, listeria, clostridium, rotavirus, cysts and other microorganisms. Moreover, the filter media can be used repeatedly without a significant decrease in its germicidal effectiveness.

A composition and method that provides a chemically grafted coating onto a substrate. The composition comprises an acrylate and a grafting initiator. The acrylate may be a waterborne urethane acrylate. The composition may also comprise resistance agents, adhesion agents, UV curing photoinitators, defoaming agents, and/or deglossing agents. The substrate may be any wood or plastic, but works well with heat shrinkable polyolefin tubing. The composition may also be quick curing such that the coating from the composition may be cured under a D bulb and an H bulb at a rate of 100-160 feet/minute. The coating on the substrate resists delamination and wear. The coating may have indicia printed on the coating, the indicia being composed from ink or other printable materials.

Durability of elastomeric bellows-type suspension and drivetrain components, particularly constant velocity joint boots, is improved by coating the elastomeric boot with a thin, flexible, and lubricious coating formed by curing the admixture of epoxy resins, curing agents, an unsaturated polymerizable monomer, a free radical polymerization and/or grafting initiator, and a non-fugitive solid lubricant. The coating strongly adheres to the elastomer and greatly increases the longevity under severe operating conditions.
