Abstract:
An enclosure forms a plurality of tiers vertically stacked in a longitudinal dimension. Each tier is a 1U modular computer system having a computer chassis configured for mounting in the multi-tiered support, and computer components that need cooling within the computer chassis. A cold plate is in thermal communication with at least one of the computer components, and convectively removes heat from that component using a liquid coolant. A heat exchanger dissipates heat from the liquid coolant, and provides liquid coolant back to the cold plate. An air mover within the chassis cools the heat exchanger, blows air across other components needing cooling, and removes heated air from the chassis. The air mover may extend substantially across the chassis, or it may blow crosswise from an outlet-ventilating direction.
Abstract:
A primary power supply and a secondary power supply are operable to supply power to at least one electrical device. A power demand of the electrical device is determined, and an efficient operating point for the primary power supply is determined. One or more of the primary power supply and the secondary power supply are used to supply power to the electrical device based on whether the primary power supply operating at an efficient operating point is operable to meet the power demand of the at least one electrical device.
Abstract:
An air conditioning unit may be controlled based on an index of performance designed to quantify re-circulation levels. For the air conditioning unit control, an index of performance set point is determined and the index of performance for a first iteration is measured. In addition, it is determined whether the measured index of performance for the first iteration equals or exceeds the index of performance set point. Moreover, a supply air temperature of the air conditioning unit is increased in response to the measured index of performance for the first iteration equaling or exceeding the index of performance set point.
Abstract:
A data center is designed by determining a compute description that describes computer resources to be used in the system from design requirements and models of the computer resources. A facility description that describes facilities to be used in the data center is determined from the compute description and models of the facilities. An integrated system describing the design of the data center is determined from the facility and compute descriptions.
Abstract:
A system for multi-stage control of humidity in fluid flow supplied to at least one information technology apparatus includes a sensor, a first stage apparatus configured to vary humidity levels in the fluid flow, and a second stage apparatus positioned downstream of the first stage apparatus along the fluid flow to further vary humidity levels in the fluid flow. The system also includes a controller configured to receive environmental condition information from the sensor, to determine whether the information indicates that the humidity level is outside of a predetermined range, and to manipulate an operation of at least one of the first stage apparatus and the second stage apparatus to vary the humidity level in the fluid flow in response to the information indicating that the humidity level is outside of the predetermined range.
Abstract:
Embodiments are directed to virtual machine migration according to environmental data in a data center. One embodiment is a method that analyzes environmental data for a data center having plural servers and migrates virtual machines among the servers to increase cooling efficiency in the data center.
Abstract:
According to one embodiment, a data center comprises a first data center section comprising one or more equipment element elements. Each computer element has one or more heat generating sources. A second data center section comprises a heat exchanger, the second data center section being substantially segregated from the first section. A heat transfer element is thermally coupled to at least some of the heat generating sources and is further thermally coupled to the heat exchanger.
Abstract:
A system and method to model and design a layout of an Internet Datacenter (IDC) for cooling. The IDC is defined as a collection of cells, the cells of the IDC are pre-characterized, an arrangement of the cells within the IDC is determined, and a profile for one or more parameters of interest for each cell are determined.
Abstract:
A device for reducing temperature variation in a plenum includes at least one pipe and a plurality of sumps containing a fluid operable to vary between a liquid state and a gaseous state depending upon a temperature of the fluid. The plurality of sumps are positioned at various locations within the plenum and the at least one pipe is in fluid communication with the plurality of sumps. In addition, the fluid, in the gaseous state, is caused to move through the at least one pipe and condense, thereby reducing the temperature at the location of the sump where the fluid was vaporized and thereby reducing temperature variation in the plenum.
Abstract:
A method of cooling components across a continuum having a plurality of levels includes receiving and evaluating detected data related to the components across the continuum. A control scheme is developed based upon the evaluated data, where the control scheme is configured to manipulate one or more actuators across a plurality of levels. In addition, one or more of the actuators across the plurality of levels are manipulated in accordance with the developed control scheme.
