    Abstract: A lithium-ion electrochemical cell assembly includes a first electrode having a first polarity and a first current collector defining a first electrically conductive tab at an edge of the first electrode. The first electrically conductive tab is substantially covered by a first insulation material. A second electrode has the first polarity and a second current collector defining a second electrically conductive tab at an edge of the second electrode. The second electrically conductive tab is substantially covered by a second insulation material. A weld nugget is formed through at least a portion of the first insulation material and the second insulation material that joins the first electrically conductive tab to the second electrically conductive tab together. Methods of forming lithium-ion electrochemical cells are also provided.

    Abstract: Lithiated electrodes, electrochemical cells including lithiated electrodes, and methods of making the same are provided. The method includes lithiating at least one electrode in an electrochemical cell by applying current across a first current collector of the at least one electrode to a second current collector of an auxiliary electrode. The electrochemical cell may be disposed within a battery packaging and the auxiliary electrode may be disposed within the battery packaging adjacent to an edge of the electrochemical cell. The at least one electrode may include a first electroactive layer disposed on or near one or more surfaces of the first current collector, and the auxiliary electrode may include a second electroactive layer disposed at or near one or more surfaces of the second current collector. The method may further include extracting the auxiliary electrode from the battery packaging and sealing the battery packaging, which includes the pre-lithiated electrochemical cell.

    Abstract: A lithium ion battery is provided that includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a separator disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. One or more of the separator, positive electrode, and negative electrode includes a transition metal compound capable of catalyzing any gaseous reactants formed in the lithium ion battery to form a liquid. The transition metal compound may include ruthenium (Ru). In certain variations, the lithium ion battery includes an electrolyte that is a conductive medium for lithium ions to move between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. The electrolyte comprises a transition metal compound capable of catalyzing a reaction of any gaseous reactants to form a liquid.

    Abstract: An electrode assembly that includes an electroactive material layer and a protective layer disposed on or adjacent to the electroactive material layer is provided. The protective layer includes a carbonaceous matrix formed from a fluoropolymer, where lithium fluoride and a nitrate salt are distributed within the carbonaceous matrix. The protective layer further includes residual fluoropolymer and has a first surface adjacent to the electroactive material layer and a second surface opposite to the first surface. A first compositional gradient in the protective layer is defined from the first surface having a first amount of lithium fluoride that is greater than a second amount of lithium fluoride at the second surface, and a second compositional gradient in the protective layer is defined from the first surface having a first amount of residual fluoropolymer that is less than a second amount of residual fluoropolymer at the second surface.

    Abstract: A thermal barrier component for an electrochemical cell according to various aspects of the present disclosure includes a functional material. The functional material includes at least one of a hydrate of a metal carbonate and a hydrate of a metal phosphate. The functional material is configured to release water vapor at a first temperature of greater than or equal to about 100° C. and decompose to release a gaseous fire retardant at a second temperature of greater than or equal to about 300° C. Another thermal barrier component according to various aspects of the present disclosure includes a hydrate and a fire retardant. The hydrate is configured to release water in an amount greater than or equal to about 1 kg at a first temperature of greater than or equal to about 100° C. The fire retardant is configured to decompose at a second temperature of greater than or equal to about 300° C.
