A tool for analog and mixed signal circuits includes a unit enabling a user to identify one or more critical interconnect lines in a chip architecture and one or more selectable, predefined topologies for said critical interconnect lines. Each topology includes one or more signal wires and a current return path. A majority of the electric field lines are contained within the boundary of the topology. The invention also includes a method for designing analog and mixed signal (AMS) integrated circuits (IC), including defining a chip architecture and a floor plan, identifying one or more critical interconnect lines and selecting pre-designed transmission line topologies for the critical interconnect lines.

Methods and apparatus are provided for detecting and correcting magnification errors while simultaneously reading or writing multiple data tracks with a multi-beam optical disk drive. An optical head for the optical disk drive includes a plurality of laser diodes that generate multiple light beams for reading from or writing to the optical disk, means for detecting a magnification error, and means for compensating for the magnification error to align the multiple light beams with multiple data tracks. A number of opto-mechanical systems are provided for correcting the magnification errors in the beams.

An optical pickup assembly for a multitrack optical disk reader includes a multi-element photodetector onto which a plurality of reflected track images are projected. Circuitry is provided for detecting a magnification error, and for generating a magnification error correction signal to correct or compensate for the magnification error. Circuitry is also provided for correcting for cross-talk components in the output signals of the multi-element photodetector responsive to the detected magnification error.

A method of profiling code executed within a monitored tier of a multi-tier computing system includes the steps of periodically sampling the code executed by processing enclaves of the monitored tier, determining in real-time the periodical sampling overhead, dynamically adjusting the periodical sampling rate, identifying the business context of each code sample, and merging request traffic data and profiling data for presenting to an operator of the multi-tier system.

A multi-track optical disk reader is provided having an optical pickup including multiple reading beams arranged in a pattern, such that each beam is directed towards a track to be read. The optical pickup is at least partly mounted on a swing-arm mechanism that orients the reading beam pattern with respect to the tracks being read. Methods and apparatus are provided for maintaining a desired position of the reading beams with respect to the tracks on an optical disk.

Methods and apparatus are provided for synchronously reading data from multiple tracks of an optical disk using multiple illumination beams. Circuitry is provided for use with a photodetector array to read and buffer data in parallel from the multiple adjacent tracks, while asynchronously providing processed data to a host processor. Circuitry is further provided for correcting phase errors resulting from variations in the linear velocity of the tracks being read, depending upon the radial position of the tracks.

Methods and apparatus are provided for illuminating an optical disk in a multi-track optical disk reader. A laser beam is collimated and focused onto an area including multiple, adjacent data tracks on the optical disk. To minimize noise caused by interference resulting from the reflection of multiple beams from the optical disk the coherency of the laser beam is reduced. This is accomplished by one or more of the following techniques: passing the laser beam through a multi-mode optical fiber, combining laser beams from multiple independent laser sources, and modulating the laser operating current at high frequency.

Methods and apparatus are provided for generating focus, tracking, and magnification error signals in an multi-track optical disk reader. An optical pickup assembly for the disk reader includes an optical sensor having multiple sensor elements. Some of the sensor elements contain multiple divisions whose outputs are summed to produce tracking, focus, and magnification error signals. Electronic and optical mechanical systems are provided for correcting or compensating for magnification errors caused by an optical pickup assembly of a multi-track optical disk reader.

Methods and apparatus are provided for simultaneously reading data from multiple tracks of an optical disk at a high rate. Circuitry is provided for use with a detector matrix to read and buffer data in parallel from the multiple adjacent tracks, while asynchronously providing processed data to a host processor. Circuitry is also provided for electronic tracking of tracks on the optical disk and for reducing cross-talk between adjacent tracks. Circuitry is further provided for correcting phase errors resulting from variations in the linear velocity of the tracks being read, depending upon the radial position of the tracks.
