The present invention is directed to a surgical implant for the fusion of two adjacent vertebrae with an upper plane for contacting an upper vertebral body and a lower plane for contacting a lower vertebral body and a tubular structure, wherein the tubular structure is formed by a plurality of tubes running from the upper plane to the lower plane and in substantially horizontal direction throughout one side of the surgical implant straight to the opposite side of the surgical implant. This tubular structure has the advantage that the formation and ingrowth of new bone is promoted and advantaged and that the degree of formation and ingrowth of new bone is detectable by X-ray measurements.

Delivery and retrieval systems for delivering or retrieving a shape-changing percutaneously implantable orthopedic device joint prosthesis that can move between a generally arcuate configuration and a substantially straightened or slightly curved configuration. The orthopedic device can be delivered with a needle that is joint expanding, actuating, pivotable, or can include a balloon. The orthopedic device acts as a soft compliant bearing surface or cushion that minimizes the bone-on-bone wear from articulation and loading and may include a covering or coating with tissue or an expanding hydrophilic material. The orthopedic device delivery system can include a loading device with a channel for storing the orthopedic device in a non-straightened configuration and orienting the orthopedic device in the proper implantation orientation. The orthopedic device can be advanced or retrieved through the loading device with a knob and/or a flexible plunger.

A prosthesis (1) for a metacarpophalangeal joint comprises a metacarpal plug member (2), a metacarpal insert member (3), and a phalangeal insert member (4). The metacarpal plug member (2) comprises an elongate body (5) which generally tapers from a proximal end (7) to a distal end (8), which has a central longitudinal axis (6), an axial bore (13), and a plurality of axially spaced first fins (9, 10, 11, 12) projecting from the elongate body (5) in a direction substantially perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis (6). The metacarpal insert member (3) comprising a head portion (15) having a convex articulating surface (17) and a stem portion (16) projecting distally from the head portion (15) for reception in the proximal end of the axial bore (6). The phalangeal insert member (4) comprises an enlarged proximal end portion (19) and an elongate shaft portion (21) that extends distally from the enlarged proximal end portion (19).
