    摘要: A mobile bearing knee prosthesis enables a surgeon to convert a mobile bearing insert having articular surfaces, supported by a tibial base plate or tray from a rotating and translating prosthesis to one that rotates only. This conversion is accomplished with a fastener or locking member that connects through an opening in the insert to the tibial base plate. This prosthesis can be used as part of a total knee surgery when the surgeon chooses to use a prosthesis that incorporates a movable articular surface. In one embodiment, a projecting portion extends proximally from the insert and cooperates with a cam on the femoral component. The projecting portion can be a post extending up from the proximal surface of the insert and the femoral component includes an intercondylar surface that may contact the post to constrain the relative motion between the femoral component and the insert. In another embodiment, the insert is a two part assembly that includes a larger member with a central opening and a smaller member that fits the opening.

    摘要: A spacing device for supporting a joint adjacent to diseased bone or missing bone tissue, comprising a support piece and a semi-resilient pad. The pad is shaped to cradle and support the healthy bone joint. The reverse side of the pad is fixedly connected to one end of the support piece. The other end of the support piece is shaped to straddle healthy tissue adjacent the damaged area, such as the ilium when supporting a hip joint and is to be fixedly connected to the adjacent healthy tissue, using a suitable mechanism, such as biocompatible Steinman pins. Diseased, damaged, or necrotic tissue can be removed without requiring removal of the natural bone joint. Because the undamaged bone joint is not replaced, the problems commonly experienced during and following bone joint replacement are avoided. In particular, blood loss during surgery, surgical cost, surgical time, and rehabilitation of the patient after surgery is reduced. The method of implanting the spacer for supporting a bone joint includes the steps of exposing the joint; curetting damaged tissue from the bone; selecting an appropriately sized spacer for the joint; inserting the spacer into position adjacent healthy bone tissue and the joint; seating the spacer in an appropriate position; and fixedly securing the spacer in the position.

    摘要: A plug for stopping the flow of bone cement in a bone channel, such as the intramedullary bone canal, or a previously prepared channel, includes an actuator and a number of flexible beams extending around the bone plug. The actuator is removably attached to a rod within an insertion tool used to deploy the bone plug at a predetermined location within the channel. Within the tool, the rod is pulled to move the actuator into a position applying a compressive force to act between the ends of each of the flexible beams. This compressive force causes each beam to buckle outward, into contact with the channel. The rod is then released from the actuator, and the tool is withrawn from the channel so that bone cement can be applied to hold a prosthesis in place within the channel in a proximal direction from the bone plug.
