A device for separating particles by size having a substantially vertical conduit. The vertical conduit has an open upper end and a closed lower end. A gas supply inlet is located between the upper end and the lower end to supply an upward flow of gas through the vertical conduit to the open end. The downwardly sloped conduit supplies a stream of various size particles to the vertical conduit. The downwardly sloped conduit has a lower side connected to the open end of the vertical conduit to form an opening in the lower side of the sloped pipe. The opening has an upstream edge and a downstream edge. The downwardly sloped conduit has a particle dam extending partially into the downwardly sloped conduit from the downstream edge of the opening. Coarser particles fall against the upward flow of gas falling down the vertical conduit to the closed end for collection. Finer particles are being lifted over the particle dam by the upward flow of gas and transported down the downwardly sloped conduit.

A method and apparatus for the manufacture of metallic filaments is provided. The method and apparatus are used in the continuous manufacture and production of metallic filaments. The apparatus comprises a vertical reactor having a vertical chamber and having three mixing nozzles disposed at the top of the chamber and three vapor lines connecting to the respective three mixing nozzles along the axes of the nozzles, and three gas lines connecting to the respective three mixing nozzles in respective tangential directions. The apparatus also has twelve ring magnets, which are coaxially disposed, and which are mounted on the outside of the vertical ractor. The apparatus also has an outlet duct at the bottom of the chamber. The three vapor lines are supplied through three respective steam-heated heat exchangers from a feed vessel for supplying iron pentacarbonyl vapor to the mixing nozzles. The three gas lines are supplied from a nitrogen receiver tank. Three secondary gas lines, which connect to the top of the reactor, are also supplied by the nitrogen receiver tank. The method of manufacture includes feeding the iron carbonyl vapor to the mixing nozzles, feeding the nitrogen to the mixing nozzles and to the top of the vessel, providing a coaxial magnetic field, and continuously carrying away a continuous supply of iron filaments.

The subscript b may be zero if an alloy or pure metal is to be prepared. The product M.sub.a x.sub.b can be prepared by relatively low temperature pyrolysis and the precursor can be used as a solution or a low melting solid. This enables one to apply a surface coating or to shape the precursor into a fiber, rod or other shape and to pyrolyze the coating or shaped article. M is a transition, lanthanide or actinide metal or tin.

Fully-grown nickel pellets are separated from the circulating load in a pellet carbonyl decomposer by discharging the load on to a conical pile of pellets formed between a horizontal circular dam and a circular feed nozzle, a flexible curtain being mounted with its lower edge touching the surface of the pile. The fullygrown pellets roll preferentially down the pile and overflow the dam with some undersize pellets, which are separated by screening and returned to circulation.

Fluid bed reactors for decomposing metal carbonyls and comprising a vertically disposed, elongated vessel for confining a bed of fluidized particulate material are provided with heating coils, that can be heat exchange coils through which heating fluid is passed or electrical resistance heating coils, in the lower part of the reactor and fluidized bed so that the lower portion of the fluidized bed functions as a heating region while the upper portion functions as a decomposing zone. The lower and upper portions of the fluidized bed are volumetrically proportioned to provide substantially equal gas velocities to promote conveyance of heated particulate material from the heating region to the decomposing region. A process for decomposing metal carbonyls is also disclosed in which separate heating and decomposing regions in a fluidized bed are established and a metal carbonyl is introduced into the decomposing region via a water-cooled lance to be decomposed on heated particulate material.
