An electro-optical backlighting panel construction for use in portable computer-based systems having direct and projection viewing modes of operation. In the illustrative embodiments of the present invention, the electro-optical backlighting panel is integrated with a LCD display panel, a micropolarization panel, and a touch-screen writing panel to provide several different types of portable computer-based systems including, for example, a portable notebook computer, a computer-driven image display device, and a portable pen-computing device. In general, each of these computer-based systems are capable of selectively displaying color video images on an actively driven display surface, or projecting such video images onto a wall surface or projection screen. These computer-based systems can be easily reconfigured for projection viewing without any sort of physical modification to the LCD display panel assembly. If desired, these computer-based systems can be used to directly view "spatially-multiplexed" images of 3-D objects or imagery during the direct viewing mode, and when desired these spatially-multiplexed images can be projected onto a wall surface or projection screen during the projection viewing mode. When the spatially-multiplexed images are viewed through electrically-passive polarized glasses, the 3-D object is perceived with stereoscopic depth sensation in either mode of viewing.

In preferred embodiment, the information processing device is selectively configurable as a laptop-style personal computer and a projection display panel. The device includes a base section that contains computer circuitry, supports data input keys, and is pivotally coupled to a display panel section having an addressable flat panel display and an opaque backing member in opposed face-to-face relation thereto. The display panel section is selectively positionable between a first position in which the flat panel display is directly observable by a user, a second position in which the backing member covers the flat panel display and the data input keys for storage purposes, and a third position in which the display panel section is generally nonoverlapping and co-planar with the base section.

The invention relates to the field of LCDs, and more particularly to an LCD module with projection function and an LCD device including the LCD module. The LCD module includes a light source, a light guide panel, and a backplane, and further includes a projection module sharing the light source of the LCD module, and a switching mechanism for switching liquid crystal display and projection. The LCD module of the invention is used for liquid crystal display in a usual state, the display mode is changed into a projection mode by the switching mechanism when the size of an LCD screen cannot meet the display requirement, and the projection area is large and can basically meet the requirement. The invention has the advantages of one machine with dual-purpose and convenient operation; in addition, a projector is integrated with the LCD module by the invention, and the light source of the LCD module is shared with the projection module by clever design, thus, a simple structure is obtained, and the cost of the device is well controlled.

The image display system comprises a spatial light modulation structure for spatially modulating the intensity of light produced from a light source, and light diffusing panel of electro-optical construction having a light scattering state in which light being transmitted therethrough is scattered in a diffusive manner, and a light transmission state in which light being transmitted therethrough is transmitted without substantial scattering. In the illustrative embodiments, the spatial light modulation structure can be an electrically-addressable LCD panel, or slide-film structures to be viewed. During the direct viewing mode, light produced from the light source is scattered by the light diffusing panel and spatial intensity modulated by the spatial light modulation structure to form a first image for direct viewing. During the projection viewing mode, light produced from the light source is transmitted through the light diffusing panel without substantial scattering and spatial intensity modulated by the spatial light modulation structure to form a second image for projection onto a projection display surface for projection viewing.

An LCD panel employing a novel scheme of systemic light recycling. A single polarization state of light is transmitted from the backlighting structure to section of the LCD panel where both spatial intensity and spectral filtering of the transmitted polarized light simultaneously occurs on a subpixel basis. At each subpixel location, spectral bands of light not transmitted to the display surface during spectral filtering, are reflected without absorption back along the projection axis into the backlighting structure. At a subcomponent level within the LCD panel, spectral components of transmitted polarized light not used at any particular subpixel structure location are effectively reflected either directly or indirectly back into the backlighting structure.
