Abstract:
Disclosed is a spray gun having a gas nozzle and a fluid nozzle, each of the nozzles being in cooperative spatial relationship with the other to cause a fluid stream issuing from the fluid nozzle to be atomized and sprayed as fluid particles by gas issuing from the gas nozzle. In a preferred embodiment the fluid nozzle orifice has therein an axially disposed rod to increase surface area from which the fluid particles can be found, the rod being a corona discharge electrode of a first polarity. The spray gun additionally has an induction charging electrode of a second polarity opposite the first polarity and disposed adjacent the gas and fluid nozzles, the induction charging electrode defining a charging zone wherein an electrostatic charge is imparted to atomized electrically-chargeable fluid particles. Relatedly disclosed is a method of applying a liquid coating composition having an electrical conductivity of less than about 0.06 .mu.mho/cm to a workpiece through utilization of both corona and induction charging in a spray gun.

This invention relates to a method of and apparatus for forming a colored shade band on an elongated area of a flexible sheet of interlayer material comprising applying a dye composition by electrostatic spraying against an elongated area of a surface of a flexible sheet of non-conductive interlayer material such as polyurethane or plasticized polyvinyl butyral. A flexible sheet to be coated is mounted on a support carriage at a loading and unloading chamber in a substantially horizontal support plane, is transferred to a coating chamber, is tilted into an oblique plane at said coating chamber where it is aligned with a platen mask, electrostatic spray means disposed to one side of said platen mask supplies an electrostatic spray of a dye composition through said platen mask to the elongated area of said flexible sheet. The coated sheet pivots back to a substantially horizontal support plane and is returned to the loading and unloading station, where the coated flexible sheet is removed and another sheet mounted for treatment. The flexible sheet so coated is useful as an interlayer in shaded, bent laminated safety glass windshields.

A device for painting, spraying, enamelling or tinting of manufactured articles in general, and for chairs in particular, includes a carriage supported for vertical movement by guides and having a pantograph arrangement for orbiting a spraying element with respect to the carriage. A support for the manufactured article is disposed in front of the spraying element and is arranged for rotating the manufactured article about a substantially vertical axis, such that spraying of the article can take place as the spraying element moves vertically and orbits and the manufactured article rotates.

A powder applicator for applying powder to form a side stripe to the interior of can bodies along side seams thereof. The powder applicator includes a device for providing a layering effect on the gas entrained powder so that although the powder is normally carried by the gaseous stream it is directed into an orifice of a nozzle as a dense stream with the carrier gas forming a separate layer. In addition, the applicator forms a seal with the interior of the can body to define a limited sealed area within which the powder may pass. This sealed area contains corona charging pins which are arranged in a longitudinal line so that a maximum charging of the powder may be effected. Also, a diffused gas is directed into the sealed area to prevent the powder from clinging to the side walls of the sealed area and the charging pins.
Abstract:
A compact apparatus for removing harmful particulate contaminants from the air in a work space includes a nozzle for atomizing water. The nozzle is connected to a supply of compressed air and to a supply of water, e.g., an ordinary water tap or storage tank. The apparatus also includes a metal ring and a power supply coupled to the ring to charge atomized water inductively as the water is expelled from the nozzle. A collar supports the ring in fixed, spaced-apart relation adjacent the nozzle. The collar is constructed, at least in part, from a non-conductive plastic, such as nylon, to avoid shorting of the power supply. Additionally, the collar includes a compressed air supply passage for introducing a stream of air into the collar. This air flows past the nozzle and the ring to prevent accumulation of water on the ring and collar and the electrical shorting which may result therefrom. Additionally, the stream of air minimizes degradation of the electrical charge on the fog of atomized water which would otherwise result from the addition thereto of oppositely charged water particles originating from the accumulation of water on the ring.

An induction-charging adapter head may be quickly and easily mounted on, or demounted from, a conventional spray device equipped with a plate-like adapter of the type disclosed. The plate-like adapter also provides for safe connection or disconnection of a high voltage source to the induction-charging adapter head electrode by providing means for maintaining an electrical path to ground between the adapter head and plate-like adapter during the making or breaking of the high voltage connection.

A powder feed device for supplying a powder dispensing apparatus such as a powder spray gun of an electrostatic powder deposition system. Entrained powder is extracted from a fluidization tank and transported through a half-inch diameter tube or hose to the dispensing apparatus. To prevent clumps of powder and/or powder adhering to the walls of the tube or hose while permitting reduced air flow speed of about 2 to 3 m/s an electric field is provided in the tube or hose and applied by an outer conductor extending around the tube or hose and an inner wire conductor inside the tube or hose extending in the direction of the flow of entrained powder, which conductors are connected across an AC voltage source. The electric field may operate constantly or intermittently.

An electrostatic, coating-dispensing apparatus includes an electrode upon which an electrostatic potential is impressed. The electrostatic potential is developed by a switching circuit, autotransformer and voltage multiplier from rectified line voltage. The entire apparatus is housed in a hand-held applicator to which line voltage is supplied. The apparatus includes a socket defined at one end thereof for interchangeably receiving containers holding various colors or types of coating material. Each container includes an electrode for contacting the first-mentioned electrode. The containers are shaped to fit snugly into the socket to hold the two electrodes in contact. An outer end wall of each container has a mesh portion through which charged particles of coating material from the interior of the container pass when the apparatus is activated.

A method and apparatus for coating the inside of tubular members, more specifically can bodies, which are open at opposite ends. The apparatus includes a supply tube and a return tube which are spaced apart to have received therebetween the tubular member to be coated. In each of the supply tube and the return tube there is positioned a corona electrode, the corona electrodes being in alignment wherein powder supplied to the interior of the tubular member is both initially charged as it passes through the supply tube and is further charged within the tubular member by an electrical field which exists between the two corona electrodes and the tubular member. Powder is supplied to the supply tube through a small diameter passage as compared to the diameter of the supply tube and there is provided a diverter which effects radially outward flow of incoming powder so that the powder is concentrated substantially adjacent the inner surface of the supply tube so that the powder delivered to the tubular member flows substantially entirely along the inner surface of the tubular member. The method and apparatus permits the provision of a thin coating on the tubular member which is uniform in thickness even at opposite ends thereof.
