Abstract:
The present disclosure provides human renal stem cells. Also described are human renal stem cells isolated from the papillary region of the human kidney and methods of isolating the same. Also described are methods for culturing, characterizing, and differentiating the same, including methods for identifying human renal stem cells that are positive for Nestin and CD133, and methods for allowing the cells to differentiate into neurons.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to methods for detecting P aeruginosa infection and bacterial burden in the lungs of patients who are at risk for P. aeruginosa infections, especially including patients with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The present method provides numerous tests (breath, blood, urine) which are readily administered to a patient that will sensitively and specifically detect the presence and extent of lung infection P. aeruginosa (both mucoid and non-mucoid), and allow monitoring of bacterial load as a parameter in monitoring treatment.
Abstract:
A cathode for use in a magnetron may include a plurality of longitudinally oriented emitter regions disposed around a longitudinal axis of the cathode. Each emitter region may be configured to emit electrons and adjacent emitter regions may be separated from one another by openings.
Abstract:
The present invention includes a magnetically susceptible polymer component, a method of making the same, and apparatuses and systems for mixing, separating or localizing a magnetically susceptible polymer compound in a reaction. The magnetically susceptible polymer component includes a polymer and a magnetically susceptible particle of a predetermined size, which yields a component having a much-improved magnetic reactivity due to the increase in magnetic material by mass percentage. The apparatuses and systems of the present invention employ controllable magnetic fields distributable in perpendicular directions in order to precisely control the orientation, position and relative motion of any magnetically susceptible components within a reaction vessel.
Abstract:
A semiconductor device is supported by a substrate with a smaller lattice constant. A metamorphic buffer provides a transition from the smaller lattice constant of the substrate to the larger lattice constant of the semiconductor device. In one application, the semiconductor device has a lattice constant of between approximately 6.1 and 6.35 angstroms, metamorphic buffer layers include Sb (e.g., AlInSb buffer layers), and the substrate has a smaller lattice constant (e.g., Si, InP or GaAs substrates).
Abstract:
The present invention relates to the use of C-reactive protein, its mutants, metabolites and polypeptides and related compounds thereof for the treatment of various disease states and conditions associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), including lupus of the skin (discoid), systemic lupus of the joints, lungs and kidneys, hematological conditions including hemolytic anemia and low lymphocyte counts, lymphadenopathy and CNS effects including memory loss, seizures and psychosis, among numerous others as otherwise disclosed herein, in another aspect of the invention, the reduction in the likelihood that a patient who is at risk for an outbreak of a disease state or condition with systemic lupus erythematosus will have an outbreak is an additional aspect of the present invention.
Abstract:
The present invention includes a radiation hardened sequential circuit, such as a bistable circuit, flip-flop or other suitable design that presents substantial immunity to ionizing radiation while simultaneously maintaining a low operating voltage. In one embodiment, the circuit includes a plurality of logic elements that operate on relatively low voltage, and a master and slave latches each having storage elements that operate on a relatively high voltage.
Abstract:
Genes and gene expression profiles useful for predicting outcome, risk classification, cytogenetics and/or etiology in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). OPAL1 is a novel gene associated with outcome and, along with other newly identified genes, represent a novel therapeutic targets.
Abstract:
The present invention provides isolated DNA molecules comprising a DNA segment encoding novel human Kunitz-type inhibitors. Also provided are DNA constructs comprising a first DNA segment encoding a novel human Kunitz-type inhibitor wherein said first DNA segment is operably linked to additional DNA segments required for the expression for the first DNA segment, as well as host cells containing such DNA constructs and methods for producing proteins from the host cells.
Abstract:
A lateral flow device includes a porous medium layer having a two-dimensional shape in plan view defined by one or more peripheral edges wherein the two dimensional shape includes a plurality of testing regions separated from one another by spaces between portions of the one or more peripheral edges. The porous medium layer further includes a fluid-receiving region in capillary flow communication through the porous medium layer to the testing regions.
