Method and apparatus for adjusting the transmission power of base stations in simultaneous communication with a mobile station. The methods described provide for the transmission power of the base stations to be aligned. In the first exemplary embodiment, the transmitters are attached to a separate control unit through communication links. The control unit then derives the most likely command stream and send that to the base stations. In the second exemplary embodiment, the control unit periodically receives the final or average transmit level in a period and an aggregate quality measure for the feedback during a period from each of the transmitters. The control unit determines the aligned power level and transmits a message indicative of the aligned power level to the transmitters. In the third exemplary embodiment, the transmitters send the control unit a message indicative of the transmit power of transmissions to the receiver. The control unit determines the aligned transmit power based on the current transmit power.

An apparatus and method for communications of scheduling information of reverse link transmissions are disclosed. A base station controller determines scheduling of a reverse link supplemental channel transmission for a mobile station in a communication system (100). The base station controller groups the mobile station in a group of mobile stations and assigns a forward link channel assignment channel to the group of mobile stations. A transceiver (400) incorporates information relating to the determined scheduling in the assigned forward link common assignment channel and transmits the assigned forward link common assignment channel to the mobile station for scheduling the reverse link supplemental channel transmission. The mobile station receives the assigned forward link common assignment channel. The mobile station schedules transmission of the reverse link supplemental channel transmission in accordance with the determined scheduling and transmits the reverse link supplemental channel in accordance with the determined scheduling.

The received preamble is then multiplied by the re-encoded preamble. The results are summed, squared, and then divided by a pilot energy value. Controlling transmission energy in a variable rate communication system that gates out portions of a frame in a predetermined and predicable fashion. In particular, the present invention describes a method and apparatus which identifies closed loop power control commands that have been generated erroneously based on portions of a frame that have been gated. The identified power control commands are ignored. In an alternative embodiment, if identification of the erroneous power control commands occurs after response measures have been taken, the transmitting station responds by setting the transmission energy back to the state it would have been in had the erroneous power control commands been identified prior to the response.

A method and apparatus for minimizing the amount of time that a mobile station is to be out of communication with an “origination” base station while searching for a suitable system to which to perform a mobile station assisted hard handoff. After being directed to search for pilot signals in an alternate frequency band, the mobile station tunes to that alternate frequency and samples the incoming data, storing those samples in memory. When a sufficient number of samples have been stored, the mobile station retunes to the origination frequency. The forward link data is again received by the mobile station, and reverse link data can be successfully transmitted to the origination base station. After retuning to the origination frequency, a searcher in the mobile station will subsequently be employed to search for pilot signal offsets utilizing the stored data collected from the alternate frequency.

A method and apparatus for coordinating the time at which a mobile station performs searches for alternative systems to which a hard handoff will occur. In one system which includes the present invention, the mobile station receives a command which instructs the mobile station as to when to tune to alternative frequencies in order to search for indicates of the presence of an alternative system. In another system which includes the present invention, predetermined times are defined with respect to a reference point in time that is common to both the origination base station and a mobile station. The mobile station tunes to alternative frequencies to perform searches only during these predetermined times. In addition, the mobile station coordinates the transmission of reports which indicate the results of searches for alternative systems such that these reports are only transmitted from the mobile station when the mobile station is tuned to the origination frequency.

A forward link power control mechanism measures the reverse link power control bits which are transmitted on the forward traffic channel. At the remote station, the reverse link power control bits from multiples base stations or multiple signal paths are measured, combined, and filtered to yield an improved measurement of the forward link signal quality. The reverse link power control bits which are deemed unreliable are omitted from use in the power control loop. The remote station generates a set of forward link power control bit in accordance with the measurements and transmits these bits to all base stations in communication with the remote station. Each base station adjusts its gain of the forward traffic channel in accordance to its measurement of the forward link power control bit. However, the gains of the forward traffic channels of the base stations are corrected periodically so that erroneous reception of the forward link power control bits by the base stations do not accumulate.

A method for limiting the peak transmit power in a CDMA communication system including the steps transmitting a first communication signal having a first high transmit power region and transmitting a second communication signal having a second high transmit power region. One of the first and second communication signals is time offset to prevent the first and second high transmit power regions from occurring simultaneously. Time shifting only a portion of one of the first and second communications signals is also taught. The first and second communication signals can also include respective first and second low transmit power regions. The time offset can be selected to align one of the first and second high transmit power regions with one of the first and second low transmit power regions. The total transmit power signal can be determined and the time offset can be selected according to the total transmit power signal to minimize a peak level of the total transmit power signal. Determining the total transmit power signal for a plurality of differing time offsets and selecting one of the time offsets according to the total transmit power signal is also taught. A fixed time offset or a randomly selected offset between the communication signals can be provided.

A method and system for operation of a personal base station where the forward link of a personal base station is on the same frequency assignment as a first forward link data signal transmitted by a macro base station belonging to a cellular communication system. A first subscriber station communicates with the macro base station. The personal base station generates a second forward link data signal and communicates with a second subscriber station. The personal base station receives the first forward link data signal and combines it with its own second forward link data signal to form a combined forward link data signal. The personal base station then transmits the combined forward link data signal. The first subscriber station is able to receive and diversity combine the combined forward link data signal, improving the signal to noise ratio that would otherwise occur in the vicinity of the personal base station.
