    Abstract: A method and apparatus for establishing a device-to-device (D2D) connection in a wireless communication system is provided. A first device may establish the D2D connection with a second device. The first device only knows information on neighbor devices of the first device, and a network does not know the information on neighbor devices of the first device. The first device determines whether to establish the D2D connection with the second device or not, based on at least one of a proximity between the first device and the second device based on a profile of the second device obtained through a neighbor discovery procedure, a presence of data to be transmitted to the second device, and a preference for the D2D connection of the first device.
