A ferrite magnetic core includes a one-piece rectangular outer member with aligned circular apertures in which the ends of a cylindrical center member are retained to thus establish a radial air gap. Radial magnetic forces acting on the core members are summed to zero to theoretically eliminate movement and result in low acoustic noise in high operating frequency power inductors and transformers. A magnetic bridge is added to reduce air gap fringing flux outside the core. Other modifications and a "C" core configuration are described.

A three phase bridge inverter supplies rectangular wave currents to an inductive load and to capacitors connected in wye across the load for wave shaping as well as filtering and power factor correction. A commutating capacitor connected to the midpoint of the wye-connected capacitors is controlled by two auxiliary thyristors. The commutating capacitor voltage is sensed and an incoming thyristor is not fired until the voltage rises to a level sufficient to commutate the next thyristor in sequence. This commutation is independent of load inductance.

A front end converter for interfacing prime power to a lower voltage distribution bus, e.g., Vdc, in a distributed power system has a natural droop characteristic which emulates a series resistor, but without associated losses. With this droop characteristic, converters are paralleled and share load current without any interconnecting control signals, thus avoiding any single point of failure and the need for several high-voltage isolation devices. The drooping effect also has a damping effect, resulting in a more stable power system.

A transformer having a very low, predetermined leakage inductance includes an elongate dielectric laminate having two surfaces. A primary winding having a pattern conformal to the configuration of the laminate is disposed on one surface and extends substantially the length of the laminate. The laminate has at least one secondary winding disposed on its other surface. The laminate is rolled with a dielectric layer about a cylinder, and the primary and secondary windings are patterned such that the primary and secondary windings comprise interleaved winding layers with the dielectric layer disposed between each of the winding layers. The rolled laminate, dielectric layer, and windings are contained within a cylindrical magnetic pot core. The result is a transformer having tightly interleaved primary and secondary windings and, therefore, a very low leakage inductance. In addition, the distance between adjacent primary and secondary turns is fixed by the thickness of the dielectric layer; hence, the leakage inductance is highly predictable.

A capacitance multiplier/regulator (FIG. 1) stores charge at high voltage across a capacitor (22,32), and capacitance-multiplies current to a load (100) by step-down transformers (26,36), controlled switches (24,34), and rectifiers (28,38). The switch pairs (24a,24b;34a,34b) each switch in antiphase, but the switching phase between the pairs is controlled (FIG. 5) in a feedback manner to controllably generate a voltage across a transformer primary winding (14.sub.p), which couples a feedback-controlled alternating voltage across secondary winding (14.sub.s). The alternating voltage is added to the unregulated voltage by a rectifier (18,20), so the bus voltage is controllably greater than the unregulated input voltage. The feedback controls either the bus voltage or the load voltage. Stress on the switches is reduced by preventing capacitor recharge during a load pulse.
