Abstract: Techniques are described for measuring angle and/or orientation of a rear drivable section (e.g., a trailer unit of a semi-trailer truck) relative to a front drivable section (e.g., a tractor unit of the semi-trailer truck) using an example rotary encoder assembly. The example rotary encoder assembly comprises a base surface; a housing that includes a second end that is connected to the base surface and a first end that is at least partially open and is coupled to a housing cap; and a rotary encoder that is located in the housing in between the base surface and the housing cap, where the rotary encoder includes a rotatable shaft that protrudes from a first hole located in the housing cap, and where a top of the rotatable shaft located away from the rotary encoder is coupled to magnet(s).

Abstract: Systems and methods for detecting trailer angle are provided. In one aspect, an in-vehicle control system includes an optical sensor configured to be mounted on a tractor so as to face a trailer coupled to the tractor, the optical sensor further configured to generate optical data indicative of an angle formed between the trailer and the tractor. The system further includes a processor and a computer-readable memory in communication with the processor and having stored thereon computer-executable instructions to cause the processor to receive the optical data from the optical sensor, determine at least one candidate plane representative of a surface of the trailer visible in the optical data based on the optical data, and determine an angle between the trailer and the tractor based on the at least one candidate plane.

Abstract: The angle of a trailer with respect to a tow vehicle is an important parameter to the stability of the vehicle and trailer. A tow vehicle pulling a trailer in a straight line is generally more stable than when the vehicle is turning. While turning, the angle between the tow vehicle and the trailer is not a straight line but is another angle depending on how sharply the tow vehicle is turning. To safely operate a vehicle towing a trailer, for a given steering input and speed, there is a maximum angle between the tow vehicle and trailer whereby exceeding the angle causes instability and may cause the trailer or tow vehicle to roll over or jackknife. Accordingly, the angle between the trailer and tow vehicle must be determined to ensure the vehicle and trailer will continue to be in control.

Abstract: A system includes an autonomous vehicle and a control device associated with the autonomous vehicle. The control device obtains a plurality of sensor data captured by sensors of the autonomous vehicle. The control device determines a plurality of rainfall levels based on the sensor data. Each rainfall level is captured by a different sensor. the control device determines an aggregated rainfall level in a particular time period by combining the plurality of rainfall levels determined during the particular time period. The control device selects a particular object detection algorithm for detecting objects by at least one sensor. The particular object detection algorithm is configured to filter at least a portion of interference caused by the aggregated rainfall level in the sensor data. The control device causes the particular object detection algorithm to be implemented for the at least one sensor.

Abstract: A system for implementing adaptive light distributions for an autonomous vehicle (comprises the autonomous vehicle, a control device, and a headlight associated with the autonomous vehicle. The control device receives sensor data from sensors of the autonomous vehicle, where the sensor data comprises an image of one or more objects on a road traveled by the autonomous vehicle. The control device determines that a light condition level on a particular portion of the image is less than a threshold light level. The control device adjusts the headlight to increase illumination on a particular part of the road that is shown in the particular portion of the image.

Abstract: Techniques are described for managing redundant steering system for a vehicle. A method includes sending a first control command that instructs a first motor coupled to a steering wheel in a steering system to steer a vehicle, receiving, after sending the first control command, a speed of the vehicle, a yaw rate of the vehicle, and a steering position of the steering wheel, determining, based at least on the speed and the yaw rate, an expected range of steering angles that describes values within which the first motor is expected to steer the vehicle based on the first control command, and upon determining that the steering position of a steering wheel is outside the expected range of steering angles, sending a second control command that instructs a second motor coupled to the steering wheel in the steering system to steer the vehicle.
