    Abstract: A fuel pump module disposed within a vehicle fuel tank has a fuel pump therein to draw fuel from the fuel tank and deliver that fuel under pressure to the vehicle engine, and a jet pump driven by the fuel pump to lower the pressure within the module to draw fuel from the fuel tank through a filtered inlet of the module when the fuel pump is operating. When the fuel pump is not operating, such as when the vehicle is not in use, the jet pump ceases to operate and the pressure within the module returns to that of the fuel tank. When the level of fuel in the fuel tank is lower than that within the fuel pump module and the pump is turned off, a portion of the fuel within the module returns to the fuel tank through the filtered inlet of the module thereby dislodging at least some of the contaminants trapped by the filter.

    Abstract: A unitary nutplate for a fluid filter assembly provides a threaded mounting interface between an engine block mounting base and the remainder of the fluid filter assembly. The unitary nutplate is designed with an enlarged inside diameter in order to reduce the moment arm between the outer shell of the fluid filter assembly and the filtering element. With the enlarged inside diameter, the annular sidewall of the unitary nutplate does not include any flow passageways for the entering fluid and accordingly other flow passageways are created. In one arrangement, the nutplate has a generally cylindrical lower wall which cooperates with an inner seal which is designed with fluid flow passageways. In an alternate nutplate design, depending projections from the lower edge of the nutplate provide a series of flow passageways therebetween and the cooperating inner seal does not include flow passageways.

    Abstract: Filters self-cleaning by hydrocyclonic action are described, in which one end of the filter housing is mounted at a higher elevation than its opposite end, the filter housing having at its lower end a chamber for accumulating dirt particles washed from the outer surface of the filter body and a discharge port for purging the chamber. Several described embodiments include an auxiliary dirt-sensing filter within the latter chamber to receive on one side dirt particles accumulated in the chamber, its opposite side being connected to a source of lower pressure to produce a fluid flow through the auxiliary filter which flow is sensed to automatically open a valve to discharge the dirt particles accumulated in the chamber. Also described is an embodiment including a pump having a rotor disposed in the filter housing such that the hydrocyclonicly flowing water also drives the pump.

    Abstract: An aerobic waste material treatment system includes a hydraulic comminutor-reaction tank and a vacuum aeration tank connected by a siphon so that comminuted solids in liquid are siphoned into the vacuum tank. A recirculating pump and fluid connection are positioned between the vacuum tank and hydraulic comminutor to recirculate the mixed liquor from the vacuum tank and reaerate it by an aspirator in the recirculating line while, at the same time, discharging tangentially into the comminutor to aid in centrifugal movement for comminuting purposes. A venturi in the recirculating pump discharge line aspirates from the vacuum tank to draw the vacuum within the vacuum tank. The air for anchor in the vacuum tank is admitted from atmosphere under control of a regulating valve. An automatic back flushing filter is connected to the effluent outlet of the vacuum tank. The filter is periodically back flushed by pulsing air from the outlet side of the filter to flush accumulated material on the filter screen back into the vacuum tank. The vacuum tank may be blown down through a blow down valve in the discharge side of the recirculating pump. Automatic batch chlorination and effluent ejection units are connected to the outlet side of the automatic back flushing filter.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for filtering a liquid utilize a filter apparatus including a center tube or flow balancing element including a helical fin. The helical fin radially contacts and supports the inner periphery of a filter media. The helical fin may be formed on a venturi center tube, or on a center tube flow balancing element for dividing the total flow of fluid through the filter apparatus into a bypass filter portion and a full-flow filter portion. The helical fin may alternately be formed on a standpipe center tube, defining a helical flow path between the inner periphery of a filter media and openings in the wall of the center tube.

    Abstract: A combination full flow media and bypass media filter cartridge for filtering fluid in an internal combustion engine. The apparatus includes a venturi filter having a full flow media attached to and extending between a first endplate and a second endplate. The second endplate includes an orifice. The apparatus further includes a stack of disks extending between a compression end and a venturi end. The stack of disks has a flow path defined by a plurality of openings wherein each disk includes at least one opening. The flow path extends between the compression end and the venturi end. The venturi end is substantially adjacent the second endplate of the venturi filter. The apparatus further comprises resilient compression member connected to the venturi filter for maintaining a minimum sealing force on the stack of disks.

    Abstract: A self-cleaning discharge system used with a wastewater treatment system. The wastewater treatment system includes a tank for collecting wastewater while the wastewater typically includes solid particles. The discharge system comprises a housing, a filter positioned in the housing, an effluent discharge apparatus positioned inside the filter, and a venturi effect flushing system positioned proximate to the bottom of the housing. The housing includes a perimeter and at least one intake aperture positioned in the perimeter to accept the wastewater. The filter is shaped to substantially restrict flow of particles into the filter and to the discharge apparatus. The discharge apparatus is in fluid communication with the wastewater in the tank and includes a discharge path to position to transport filtered wastewater outside of the tank. The venturi effect system is in fluid communication with the housing and the tank to return the particles restricted by the filter to the tank.
