Abstract:
An arcing fault detecting module is attached to a circuit breaker employing a thermal-magnetic trip unit to separate the circuit breaker contacts upon occurrence of an arcing fault. The arcing fault module contains a logic circuit and a current transformer for detecting the arcing fault and actuating a trip solenoid to articulate the circuit breaker operating mechanism and separate the circuit breaker contacts.
Abstract:
A circuit breaker thermal-magnetic trip unit for arcing fault detection includes a current transformer having a gapped magnetic core arranged around the load side of the trip unit. The bimetal within the trip unit is positioned abutment with the gap in the transformer core to thereby heat the bimetal causing the bimetal to trip and separate the circuit breaker contacts.
Abstract:
An arc detection assembly is provided and includes first and second conductors including first and second terminal ends, respectively, which are engageable to form an electrical connection and an arc detection system. The arc detection system includes a fusible link disposed proximate to one of the first and second terminal ends and configured to break in response to an arcing condition between the first and second terminal ends and a monitoring circuit coupled to the fusible link and configured to determine when breakage of the fusible link occurs and to thereby determine that the arcing condition has occurred.
Abstract:
In one example, an arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) is provided. The AFCI may include a plurality of current arc signature detection blocks configured to output a plurality of corresponding current arc signatures, and a processor. The processor may be configured to receive each of the plurality of current arc signature from each of plurality of current arc signature detection blocks, respectively, and generate a first trigger signal. The processor may be further configured to assess each of the current arc signatures, determine whether an arc fault exists based on the assessment, and generate the first trigger signal if an arc fault is determined to exist. A method for detecting an arc fault is also provided.
Abstract:
A multi-pole circuit interrupter configured to be coupled between an AC source and an electric load electronically detects a hazardous condition associated with energizing of poles and responds to overcome the hazardous condition using a solenoid. The multi-pole circuit interrupter comprises a first switch to energize a first pole on a phase A conductor of the multi-pole circuit interrupter and a second switch to energize a second pole on a phase B conductor of the multi-pole circuit interrupter. The multi-pole circuit interrupter further comprises an electronic solid-state circuit coupled to the phase A conductor and the phase B conductor to detect a line voltage variation and control a current to a device in response to trip an energized pole among the first pole and the second pole if only one of the first pole and the second pole is energized when a user controls a tie bar to turn ON or turn OFF the multi-pole circuit interrupter or when a trip bar fails to trip one of the first pole and the second pole.
Abstract:
An apparatus and a method are provided to block and unblock a breaker handle of a circuit breaker having main contacts. The apparatus comprises a locking mechanism including a locking handle shaft and a locking latch. The locking handle shaft is configured to latch the locking mechanism for keeping the breaker handle in a mid-position in which the main contacts stay open. The locking handle shaft has a latching surface configured to be removed from its position in order to rotate the breaker handle to a fully ON position in which the main contacts fully close. The locking latch is configured to prevent rotation of the locking handle shaft. The locking latch is configured to engage and disengage with the locking handle shaft in order to rotate the breaker handle from a reset position to the mid-position in which the locking mechanism locks the breaker handle rotation thus preventing the main contacts from closing. The breaker handle is stopped at the mid-position by the locking mechanism until a self-test is passed.
Abstract:
An electrical switching apparatus includes a transductor circuit that senses a direct current between an input terminal and an output terminal and outputs an alternating current proportional to the direct current. The electrical switching apparatus also includes a current sensor configured to sense an alternating current component of the direct current. The electrical switching apparatus further includes an alternating current electronic trip circuit including an arc fault detection circuit configured to detect an arc fault based on the sensed alternating current component. The alternating current electronic trip circuit is also configured to control pairs of separable contacts to trip open based on the alternating current output from the transductor circuit or the detected arc fault. The electrical switching apparatus also includes a power supply structured to provide direct current power to the alternating current electronic trip circuit.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein are various embodiments of devices and related methods for detecting an electrical arc event using a motor management relay and for suppressing the electrical arc event. The motor management relay may incorporate an optical arc-flash sensor configured to detect an optical event. Control logic may analyze the optical event and determine whether the optical event corresponds to an electrical arc event. When an electrical arc event is detected an instruction may be issued via a control port in communication with the control logic to implement a protective action. According to various embodiments, a plurality of sensors for monitoring electrical characteristics of a motor may also be in communication with the control logic. Input from the sensors may be analyzed in order to determine whether the optical event corresponds to an electrical arc event.

Abstract:
A circuit interrupter trip apparatus operably connected to an operating mechanism of a circuit interrupter includes a sensor and a switch operably connected and responsive to the sensor. The switch is positioned such that the sensor changes the operating state of the switch in response to detection of a predetermined electrical condition, such as an electrical fault. A controller is operably connected to the switch and is configured to activate the operating mechanism in response to a change in the operating state of the switch.
