Abstract: An independent speed variable frequency alternating current (AC) generator apparatus may include a rotor and a stator, the rotor configured to rotate relative to the stator. The apparatus may further include a magnetic field source attached to the rotor and configured to generate a first rotating magnetic field upon rotation of the rotor, where a rotational frequency of the first rotating magnetic field is dependent on a rotational frequency of the rotor. The apparatus may also include a main rotor winding attached to the rotor and configured to generate a second rotating magnetic field upon the rotation of the rotor, where a rotational frequency of the second rotating magnetic field is independent of the rotational frequency of the rotor.

Abstract: An aircraft starting and generating system includes a starter/generator and an inverter/converter/controller (200) that is connected to the starter/generator and that generates AC power to drive the starter/generator in a start mode for starting a prime mover of the aircraft, and that converts AC power, obtained from the starter/generator after the prime mover have been started, to DC power in a generate mode of the starter/generator. A four leg inverter is coupled with a DC power output (452) of the starter/generator and has an inverter/converter/controller (ICC) (580) with a four leg MOSFET-based bridge configuration that drives the starter/generator in a start mode for starting a prime mover of the aircraft, and converts DC power to AC power in a generate mode of the starter/generator. A four leg bridge gate driver (560) is configured to drive the four leg MOSFET-based bridge (580) during start and generate mode using bi-polar pulse width modulation (PWM).

Abstract: A synchronous machine and related systems include a stator and rotor separated by an air gap. The rotor includes a rotating DC power supply coupled to exciter windings disposed adjacent the air gap. Power from air gap harmonics, including air gap slot harmonics induce current in the exciter windings, which is rectified and supplied to the rotor field windings. In operation, a desired current level in the rotor field windings can be achieved through control of the DC power supply or superposition of harmonics into the stator winding current which induces the prescribed current in exciter windings.

Abstract: A rotor for a synchronous machine of a motor vehicle includes an excitation coil configured to generate a magnetic field necessary for rotation of the rotor in a stator of the synchronous machine. The rotor also includes a supply circuit, to which energy is fed contactlessly such that the supply circuit supplies the excitation coil with the energy. The rotor also includes a demagnetization circuit configured to demagnetize the excitation coil, which, upon collapse of the energy supply of the excitation coil, diverts a current flowing through the excitation coil into a circuit branch in which at least one component for demagnetization is arranged, wherein the at least one component is also configured to perform a protection function to protect the supply circuit against an induced voltage generated at the excitation coil.
