Abstract: Method and apparatus thereof to separate aluminum from aluminum-containing source material, such as fly ash, includes preparing a slurry of the source material and water in an agitation tank and adding a leaching reactant to the slurry in an amount dependent on the amount of aluminum in the source material. After agitation, transferring the mixture to a settling pond. After settling, transferring the liquid as a pregnant solution to an electric cell. Treating the pregnant solution in the electric cell by applying an electrical current that is periodically reversed as the pregnant solution passes between at least two metal plates in the electric cell. Collecting the treated solution in a cone bottom tank and separating aluminum particles from the treated solution using a filter press. Drying the particulate aluminum and pressing the aluminum into solid shapes.

Abstract: Methods of manufacturing a current collector assembly may include iteratively solving a model on a computer. The model may utilize received inputs including a variable number and arrangement of conductive elements to determine as an output a heat distribution within a hypothetical current collector assembly. The methods may also include identifying as a solution to the model a number and arrangement of conductive elements coupled with a current collector that produces a contained heat distribution within the hypothetical current collector assembly. The methods may also include manufacturing the current collector assembly, and the current collector assembly may include a defined plurality of apertures within a refractory base of the current collector assembly in a pattern configured to receive the number and arrangement of conductive elements identified as the solution to the model.

Abstract: A contact bar and related techniques allow enhanced electrolytic refining of metals, e.g. avoiding or reducing electrical short circuits. The contact bar is adapted to rest on an insulating capping board for contacting symmetrical electrodes to provide locations for electrical contact therewith. The contact bar includes a central portion laying on the capping board and branch portions extending laterally outward from the central portion, such that the branch portions fit in between seats of the capping board. The contact bar may include a retention member enabling to reduce lateral movement of the electrodes, and may include a plurality of apertures to engage corresponding holding arms of the capping board. There may be a plurality of adjacent similar contact bar segments.

Abstract: Electrochemically reacting a lanthanide or actinide in solvent at a working electrode; wherein the solvent comprises an organic solvent such as acetonitrile which have a dielectric constant of at least three; wherein the solvent system further comprises an electrolyte; wherein the working electrode comprises an ionically conducting or permeable film such as a fluorosulfonate film; wherein at least one ligand such as triflate distinct from the ionically conducting or permeable film is present; wherein the ligand is chemically similar to a structure in the ionically conducting or ionically permeable film; and optionally wherein the electrochemical oxidation or reduction is carried out under the influence of a magnetic field which favorably enhances the reaction. Improved electrochemical methods, identification, and separation can be achieved. Also, an electrochemical device, wherein the device is adapted to employ the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode, wherein the cathode is magnetically modified, or the electrolyte comprises at least one lanthanide or actinide, or both.
