    摘要: Acetone cyanohydrin is converted to alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid by contacting the cyanohydrin with alpha-hydroxymethanesulfonic acid and water at a temperature of about 70.degree.-125.degree. C. The alpha-hydroxymethanesulfonic acid is an equilibrium product of the reaction of water, sulfur dioxide and formaldehyde.

    摘要: A process for laminating a polar substrate with a film cast from a sulfonated block copolymer having at least one end block A and at least one interior block B wherein each A block contains essentially no sulfonic acid or sulfonate ester functional groups and each B block is a polymer block containing from about 10 to about 100 mol percent sulfonic acid or sulfonate ester functional groups based on the number of monomer units. The film is exposed to water and dried onto a polar or active metal substrate. The laminates do not delaminate in the presence of water and may be used for a variety of applications including energy exchange applications.

    摘要: A super-tough polymeric composition comprising an engineering thermoplastic and a modified radial polymer. The engineering thermoplastic is selected from the group consisting of polyamides, thermoplastic polyesters, polyphenylene ether resins, polyarylene sulfide resins, polysulfone and the like. The modified radial polymer is modified by grafting a compound containing a carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid derivative group. The modified, radial polymer has from about 3 to about 50 arms, as determined using light scattering techniques and the arms will be olefin polymers. The polymer compositions will yield shaped articles which fail ductilely when tested using ASTM procedure D-256 at room temperature and some at -20.degree. F.

    摘要: Unsaturated hydrocarbon polymers are hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst obtained by combining a Group VIII-A metal alkoxide or carboxylate and an alkyl or hydride of a metal selected from Groups I-A, II-A and III-B and then functionalized by contacting the hydrogenated polymer with a functionalizing agent before the hydrogenation catalyst is quenched or otherwise deactivated. The hydrogenation is, generally, accomplished at relatively mild conditions to avoid degradation of the polymer and, in the case of unsaturated copolymers comprising aromatic unsaturation, to avoid any significant hydrogenation of the aromatic unsaturation. Generally, the hydrogen partial pressure employed will be below about 1000 psig and the hydrogenation temperature will be below about 125.degree. C. The hydrogenated polymer may be functionalized by reaction with functionalizing agent select from the group carbon dioxide, ethylene oxide, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acid salts and esters, halides, epoxides, sulfur, boron alkoxides, isocyanates, various silicon compounds and the like. Carbon dioxide is a particularly preferred functionalizing agent since the thus functionalized polymer is useful as a modifier in sheet and bulk molding compositions and readily responds to the presence of thickening agents.
