Abstract: An article includes a substrate including a glass, glass-ceramic, or ceramic composition and a primary surface. An optical film is disposed on the primary surface. The film includes a first plurality of layers which includes diamond or diamond-like carbon and a second plurality of layers. Each layer of the second plurality of layers is arranged in an alternating manner with each layer of the first plurality of layers. The optical film includes an average photopic light reflectance of about 2.0% or less and a transmittance of about 85% or greater from about 500 nm to about 800 nm.

Abstract: One or more aspects of the disclosure pertain to an article including a film disposed on a glass substrate, which may be strengthened, where the interface between the film and the glass substrate is modified, such that the article retains its average flexural strength, and the film retains key functional properties for its application. Some key functional properties of the film include optical, electrical and/or mechanical properties. The bridging of a crack from one of the film or the glass substrate into the other of the film or the glass substrate can be prevented by inserting a crack mitigating layer between the glass substrate and the film.

In one or more embodiments, when a strain is applied to the article, the article exhibits a failure strain of 0.5% or greater. Patterned coating may include a particulate coating or may include a discontinuous coating. The patterned coating of some embodiments may cover about 20% to about 75% of the surface area of the substrate. Methods for forming such articles are also provided.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, there is an article including a glass-ceramic substrate having a major surface, an optical coating is disposed on the major surface and forms an appearance-enhancing surface, the optical coating including a appearance-enhancing coating, and a scratch-resistant layer. The article exhibits a hardness of 8 GPa or more, and a photopic average diffuse light reflectance measured at the appearance-enhancing surface of one of: (i) about 0.3% or less; (ii) about 0.2% or less; (iii) about 0.1% or less, over an optical wavelength regime in the range from about 400 nm to about 800 nm. Further, in the (L*, a*, b*) colorimetry system of the International Commission on Illumination, at near-normal incidence, the article comprises a diffuse reflectance dE* of one of: (i) about 3 or less; (ii) about 2 or less; or (iii) about 1 or less, where dE* is defined as dE*=sqrt(L*2+a*2+b*2).

Abstract: An article is described herein that includes: a translucent substrate having a major surface; and an anti-reflective coating disposed on the major surface and forming an anti-reflective surface. The article exhibits a single side average photopic light reflectance at the anti-reflective surface of less than 0.35%. Further, the article exhibits a single side color shift (ΔC) of less than 6 over an incident angle range from 0 degrees to 60 degrees incidence at the anti-reflective surface, wherein the anti-reflective coating comprises a physical thickness from about 50 nm to less than 500 nm. In addition, the anti-reflective coating comprises a plurality of layers that comprises at least one low refractive index layer and at least one high refractive index layer. Further, each high refractive index layer has a refractive index of greater than 2.0 and each low refractive index layer has a refractive index of less than 1.7.

Abstract: Embodiments of articles including a low-contrast anti-reflection coating are disclosed. The coated surface of such articles exhibits a reduced difference in reflectance between a pristine state and when a surface defect is present. In one or more embodiments, the coated surface of such articles exhibits a first average reflectance in the range from about 0.6% to about 6.0% in a pristine condition and a second average reflectance of about 8% or less after removal of a surface thickness of the anti-reflection coating. In other embodiments, the coated substrate exhibits a second average reflectance of about 10% or less, when the coated surface comprises a contaminant. In some embodiments, the coated substrate exhibits a first color coordinate (a*1, b*1) in a pristine condition and a second color coordinate (a*2, b*2) after the presence of a surface defect such that Δa*b* is about 6 or less.

Abstract: An article that includes: an inorganic oxide substrate having opposing major surfaces; and an optical film structure disposed on a first major surface of the substrate, the optical film structure comprising one or more of a silicon-containing oxide, a silicon-containing nitride and a silicon-containing oxynitride and a physical thickness from about 50 nm to less than 500 nm. The article exhibits a hardness of 8 GPa or greater measured at an indentation depth of about 100 nm or a maximum hardness of 9 GPa or greater measured over an indentation depth range from about 100 nm to about 500 nm, the hardness and the maximum hardness measured by a Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test. Further, the article exhibits a single-side photopic average reflectance that is less than 1%.

Abstract: A glass article having a low level of grainy appearance that can appear to have a shift in the pattern of the grains with changing viewing angle of a display, or “sparkle.” The glass article—which, in some embodiments, is a transparent glass sheet—has small-angle-scattering properties and/or distinctness-of-reflected-image (DOI), leading to improved viewability in display applications, especially under high ambient lighting conditions. In some embodiments, the antiglare surface of the glass sheet is an etched surface, with no foreign coating present on the antiglare surface.

In one or more embodiments, the articles include a substrate, and an optical film disposed on the substrate. The optical film includes a scratch-resistant layer and an optical interference layer. The optical interference layer may include one or more sub-layers that exhibit different refractive indices. In one example, the optical interference layer includes a first low refractive index sub-layer and a second a second high refractive index sub-layer. In some instances, the optical interference layer may include a third sub-layer.
