Abstract:
An orthopedic plate has a portion with a curved bottom surface that is designed to extend longitudinally along the bone and change the inferior curve as it advances proximally along the bone from a shallower to a sharper radius and further spirals downward as the plate advances. The plate includes a set of tabs, offset from the longitudinal axis of the plate to provide for better pullout values. The ears may be located at the terminal portion of the plate or somewhat more intermediate to the terminus of the plate, depending on the intended application. A point in the center of the central screw hole can be used to define the origin of the plate, and the angles of the screw and/or pegs holes can be referenced with Z, Y, and Z coordinates relative to this central hole.

Abstract:
This invention provides caspase inhibitors having the formula: wherein R1 is CO2H, CH2CO2H, or esters, amides or isosteres thereof; R2 and R3 are each independently selected from hydrogen or an optionally substituted C1–C6 aliphatic group; and R4 and R5 are each independently selected from hydrogen, an optionally substituted C1–C6 aliphatic group, or R4 and R5 taken together with the ring to which they are attached form an optionally substituted bicyclic ring. The caspase inhibitors are useful for treating a number of diseases such as cancer, acute inflammatory and autoimmune disorders, ischemic diseases and certain neurodegenerative disorders.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to an orthopedic plate and screw system and instruments for surgical fixation of a small bone or bones including specifically the small bones of the spine. The plate facilitates three dimensional contouring to provide for a variety of applications and to accommodate individual variation in bone shape. The plate has a modified x shape including a central trunk portion including one or more screw holes along a longitudinal axis and a set of divergent upper and an oppositely extending set of divergent lower arms, each arm including screw holes which are placed at a radially equal distance but which diverging asymmetrically from the longitudinal axis relative to its paired upper or lower mate. The screws of the system are self-starting, self-tapping screws including the option of partial or full cannulation. In a further embodiment, the plate is intended for use through the length of the spine.
Abstract:
A method of forming a pattern of electrical conductors on a substrate (18) consists of forming metal nanoparticles on a conductive material. A light absorbing dye is mixed with the metal nanoparticles. The mixture is then coated on the substrate. The pattern is formed on the coated substrate with laser light (14). Unannealed material is removed from the substrate.
Abstract:
A compression wire is partially threaded and has a trocar insertion point for insertion into a bone segment to be stabilized with respect to a second bone segment. A button mates with the wire and is crimped into position on the wire to cause compression and stabilization between the bone segments. A cannulated instrument is used to grasp and apply tension to the wire at a given torque, and further to crimp the button to maintain tension on the wire in a location suitable for later removal. In a second embodiment for osteoporotic bone the wire further includes an internally threaded screw or helix which is implanted into the bone segment to mate with the threads of the wire. The invention further relates to the method of bone stabilization where the threaded wire is implanted into the distil end of a bone segment in ante grade or retro grade and also in a sub-cutaneous or percutaneous fashion and extending through an adjacent bone segment. An end of the wire protrudes from the second bone segment and end receives a button slid onto the wire and crimped into the desired tension. The end of the wire assembly may be left proud for later removal, or countersunk in the bone so as not to protrude.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for aligning in five degrees of freedom a multichannel laser printhead to be used in thermal transfer of material from a donor to a substrate is disclosed.
Abstract:
A system and method for entering text from a user includes a programmed processor that receives inputs from the user and disambiguates the inputs to present word choices corresponding to the text. In one embodiment, inputs are received in two or more modalities and are analyzed to present the word choices. In another embodiment, a keyboard is divided into zones each of which represents two more input characters. A sequence of zones selected by the user is analyzed to present word choices corresponding to the zone selected.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a facile process for the preparation of tri- and tetra—substituted pyrimidines. The process is useful for preparing inhibitors of protein kinases, especially Aurora kinase. These inhibitors are useful for treating or lessening the severity of Aurora—mediated diseases or conditions.
