摘要: A method for detecting chemical reactions uses a nanocalorimeter having a substrate including thermal isolation capability residing on the substrate, thermal equilibration regions residing within the thermal isolation capability, and thermal measurement capability residing within each of the thermal equilibration regions. The thermal measurement device is connected to detection electronics. The method includes depositing drops of potentially reactive chemical solutions within the thermal equilibration region. These potentially reactive solution drops are merged through the use of drop merging electrodes residing within the thermal isolation region. The thermal change occurring within the merged solution drops is then measured with the detection electronics.

摘要: A method of making a print head is disclosed for use in a marking apparatus in which a propellant stream is passed through a channel and directed toward a substrate. Marking material, such as ink, toner, etc., is controllably introduced into the propellant stream and imparted with sufficient kinetic energy thereby to be made incident upon a substrate. A multiplicity of channels for directing the propellant and marking material allow for high throughput, high resolution marking. Multiple marking materials may be introduced into the channel and mixed therein prior to being made incident on the substrate, or mixed or superimposed on the substrate without re-registration.

摘要: A method of fabricating ink jet printheads from channel plates with a low stress integral ink inlet filters and heater plates. The channel plates are obtained from p-type (100) silicon wafers, one surface of which has a lightly doped n-type patterned layer in the form of a screen. In the preferred embodiment, a first etch resistant material is deposited on both surfaces of the wafer and patterned on the surface of wafer opposite the one containing the n-type layer. The patterned first etch resistant material provides a first etch mask with channel and reservoir vias. A second etch resistant material is deposited over the first etch resistant material and patterned on the same wafer surface as the first etch resistant material in order to provide a second etch mask having reservoir vias smaller than the reservoir vias in the first etch mask, but aligned therewithin. The wafer with the two patterned etch masks is placed into an anisotropic etch bath and etched with a bias potential between the p-n junction formed by the patterned n-type layer and the p-type wafer and an electrode also in the etch bath. The patterned, lightly doped, n-type layer functions as an etch stop when under a bias potential, and because the doping level of the n-type layer is low, the internal stress is also low. When the reservoir recesses have been etched through the wafer leaving the patterned n-type layer covering the open bottom, the second etch resistant material is removed and the wafer replaced into the anisotropic etch bath to etch the channel recesses and complete the reservoir recesses with a similar bias potential. The first etch resistant material is removed and the channel wafer is aligned and bonded to a heater wafer. The bonded wafer pair is separated into a plurality of printheads having an integral inlet filter devoid of internal stress.

摘要: Intralumenal devices and methods are provided for transmucosal drug delivery. The device may comprise a housing configured for intralumenal deployment into a human or animal subject; a drug-dispensing portion which contains at least one drug; and an electrically-actuatable portion configured to disrupt at least one region of a mucosal barrier adjacent to the housing at a selected time while intralumenally deployed in the human or animal subject. The device may be operable to dispense the drug from the housing to a region of the mucosal barrier disrupted by the electrically-actuatable portion.

摘要: A method of controlling a main fluid in a conduit using a microvalve is described. The microvalve includes a corresponding actuation aperture in an actuation aperture layer. A control fluid flows through the actuation aperture in response to an electric field applied via a charge distribution near an actuation aperture layer. In one embodiment, the electric field may adjust the opening and closing of the actuation aperture thereby controlling the flow of the control fluid. In a second embodiment, the control fluid is an electrorheological fluid where the electric field controls the viscosity of the ER fluid, thereby controlling fluid flow through the actuation aperture. In both embodiments the flow of the control fluid controls stretching of a flexible membrane into and out of the conduit, thereby controlling the flow of the main fluid by opening or closing the conduit.

摘要: Two substantially one-dimensional scan line images are simultaneously generated by modulating a two-dimensional homogenous light field using a spatial light modulator having light modulating elements arranged in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns. An upper group of modulating elements are configured using a first scan line image data group, and a lower group of modulating elements are configured using a second scan line image data group. The homogenous light source is then pulsed (toggled) to direct the two-dimensional homogenous light field onto the spatial light modulator. The resulting two-dimensional modulated light field is directed through an anamorphic optical system, which images and concentrates the modulated light on an imaging surface such that two parallel one-dimensional scan line images are simultaneously formed on the imaging surface.
