    摘要: Articles and methods for controlling flow in fluidic systems, especially in microfluidic systems, are provided. In one aspect, a microfluidic system described herein includes a configuration such that the actuation of a single valve can allow the switching of fluids from a first fluid path (e.g., a first channel section) to a second fluid path (e.g., a second channel section). This may be achieved, for example, by incorporating a valve with a first channel section, which may have a lower hydrodynamic resistance than a second channel section prior to actuation of the valve. Actuation of the valve can cause only the hydrodynamic resistance of the first channel section to increase, thereby redirecting fluid flow into the second channel section (which now has a relatively lower hydrodynamic resistance). In some embodiments, the valve comprises a control channel for introducing a positive or reduced pressure, and is adapted to modulate fluid flow in an adjacent channel section by constricting or expanding the channel section. For example, the valve and/or the channel section may be formed in a flexible material and actuation of the valve may be achieved by applying a positive or reduced pressure to the valve to cause deformation of both the valve and the channel section. Another aspect of the invention includes articles and methods associated with manipulation of multiphase materials (e.g., dispersions). For instance, one or more valves may be combined with a flow focusing system so as to form droplets of different volumes and/or frequencies without the need to vary flow rates of the fluids when they are introduced into the fluidic system.

    摘要: An electrostatic actuator is provide that can include a fluidic line, a first electrode, and a second electrode such that a gate chamber portion of the fluidic line is sandwiched between the first electrode and the second electrode. The electrostatic actuator can also include a pressure-balancing channel in fluid communication with the gate chamber portion where the first electrode is sandwiched between the pressure-balancing channel and the gate chamber portion. A pneumatic valve system is provided which includes an electrostatic gate and a fluidic channel fluidly separate from a fluidic control line. A pneumatic valve portion of the fluidic control line can be positioned relative to a portion of the fluidic channel such that expansion of the pneumatic valve portion restricts fluid flow through the fluidic channel. Methods of using an electrostatic actuator and a pneumatic valve system are also provided.

    摘要: This invention provides a device comprising at least one diaphragm valve actuated by a hydraulic actuation system. The device comprises a fluidics layer, an actuation layer and an elastic layer sandwiched between the fluidics layer and the actuation layer. The diaphragm valve comprises: a valve inlet and valve outlet comprised in the fluidics layer; a valve seat; a diaphragm comprised in the elastic layer; and an actuator. The diaphragm is actuatable to move into contact or out of contact with the valve seat, thereby closing or opening the diaphragm valve. The actuator comprises: a hydraulic conduit; a translator; and an incompressible fluid contained within the hydraulic conduit, wherein the incompressible fluid communicates with the translator and with the diaphragm. Translation of the translator transmits pressure through the incompressible fluid to actuate the diaphragm. The invention also provides systems including elements to operate the device and methods of using the device.
