A full color three electrode surface discharge type plasma display device that has fine image elements and is large and has a bright display. The three primary color luminescent areas are arranged in the extending direction of the display electrode pairs in a successive manner and an image element is composed by the three unit luminescent areas defined by these three luminescent areas and address electrodes intersecting, these three luminescent areas. Further, phosphors are coated not only on a substrate but also on the side walls of the barriers and on address electrodes. The manufacturing processes and operation methods of the above constructions are also disclosed.

A method and circuit of driving a flat display panel formed of a plurality of cells each having a memory function, where the cells are formed at cross points of a plurality of X-electrodes and a plurality of Y-electrode orthogonal to the X-electrodes, a period of a frame for displaying a single picture is divided into a plurality of sequential subframes. Each of the subframes comprises: an addressing period during which cells to be lit later in a display period are selected from all the cells by being written by having a wall charge therein; and the display period subsequent to the address period for lighting the selected cells by applying sustain pulses to all the cells. A number of the sustain pulses included in each display period is predetermined differently for each subframe according to a weight given to each subframe. Gradation of visual brightness of each cell is determined by the accumulated number of the sustain pulses included in the subframes that are selectively operated during a single frame according to a required brightness level for each cell. Thus, an adequate time length can be allocated to required number of subframes to achieve a quality brightness-gradation for each cell.

A method of driving a gas discharge display panel having first and second arrays of parallel conductors disposed in spaced relationship on opposite sides of a gas filled panel and oriented at transverse angles to each other, the electrodes of each array being insulated from direct contact with the gas by a corresponding layer of dielectric material. Coordinate intersections of the electrodes of the two arrays define corresponding individual discharge sites. A write signal is applied to the electrodes of the first array, in line sequential manner, to fire all of the cells associated with each electrode; thereafter, an erase pulse is applied to that same electrode, which has the capability of erasing all of the cells; for those cells selected to be illuminated, erase signal cancelling pulses are applied selectively to the corresponding electrodes of the second array, of reduced amplitude relative to the erase signal but sufficient to inhibit the erase function and thus prevent termination of the discharge in the selected cells. In a rectangular such display panel in which the first array has far fewer electrodes than the second array, the use of cancelling signals of relatively low level voltages permits fabrication of a drive circuit using less expensive elements, such as transistors, having low breakdown voltages, contributing to a significant reduction in cost of the drive circuits for the panel.

An AC plasma display panel with a coated thin film dielectric layer on the electrodes has a structure which includes double layers of chromium (Cr) and copper (Cu). After three metal layers of chromium, copper, and chromium are formed on a glass substrate, these three metal layers are subjected to patterning with the desired electrode pattern in such a fashion as to eliminate the upper chromium layer. Then, a thin dielectric film of alumina (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3) is evaporated onto the two remaining metal layers forming the electrodes. This combination of two layer metal electrodes and dielectric layer is very useful in providing a self-shifting plasma display panel having high quality and reliability.

A self shift type gas discharge panel in which pluralities of buses are respectively provided on a pair of substrates disposed opposite each other, electrodes are respectively connected to the buses and shift channels are set up in row and column directions with arrays of discharge points formed between the opposed electrodes of the substrates to enable shifting of a discharge spot in the row or column direction. On the substrates, the electrodes and the buses are so arranged as not to intersect each other, which allows ease in the manufacture of the discharge panel and ensures stable shifting of the discharge spot.
