摘要: A digital camera which allows voice annotations to be recorded for each picture, but which includes text annotations with each such picture when the picture is transmitted from the camera. The digital camera includes an image sensing apparatus operable to receive light comprising an image and output image data representing the image, a first memory operable to store the image data, a sound sensing apparatus operable to receive a sound and output sound data representing the sound, wherein the sound is speech and the sound data is voice data, a second memory operable to store the voice data, a third memory operable to store text data; and a voice recognition apparatus operable to access the second memory, translate the stored voice data into text data and store the text data in the third memory, when the digital camera is provided with external power. In one embodiment, the voice recognition apparatus includes a microprocessor operable to execute image capture routines, voice recording routines and voice recognition routines. The microprocessor may be further operable to execute data transfer routines.

摘要: The invention locates store employees by receiving a set of unique signature transmissions by a set of receivers on the store. Each transmission emanates from a badge worn by a store employee. In a database, each unique signature with an employee and employee biographical information, including an expertise of an employee. The transmissions from the badges are used to locate employees in the store. Responsive to a user request for employees having a given expertise, a store map is displayed on an informational kiosk wherein showing the location of the employees having the given expertise.

摘要: A method for enabling a user having access to a telephone device to browse the Internet without a Web browser. The method begins by establishing a connection between the user's telephone device and a computer. The computer includes a Web browser and a text-to-speech processor. Using the telephone device, the user enters information identifying a given URL. The input information is then supplied to the Web browser, which fetches the desired page. The text portions of the Web page are then converted to speech and output to the user over the telephone device. Alternatively, the user may elect to transmit the page to a given fax destination, to e-mail the page to a given e-mail destination address, or to e-mail the URL itself. Using the telephone as an input device, the user may selectively navigate the Web page or explore links in the page.

摘要: A method for providing control accesses between a device on a non-proprietary bus and a device on a proprietary bus is disclosed. A gateway controller is connected between a proprietary bus and a non-proprietary bus. A message originated from a device on the non-proprietary bus intended for a device on the proprietary bus is checked by the gateway controller to determine if a transmission of the message should be permitted according to a permitted message bitmap. The permitted message bitmap contains a list of devices on the non-proprietary bus that are previously registered as able to communicate with devices on the proprietary bus and a list of permitted messages associated with each of the devices on the non-proprietary bus. The transmission of the message to the device on the proprietary bus is denied if the message is not registered within the permitted message bitmap.

摘要: A card structure provides an existing card having an associated card service and further having at least one associated service of at least one other card that is used by a card user. A display is coupled to the card structure for displaying desired information on the overloaded card. The overloaded card display comprises a silicone sheet display having embedded thereon an array of electrostatically chargeable balls. An electric charge is applied to each of the balls so that each of the balls is in a desired position to display the information on the overloaded card. The card is read by a reader at a card terminal, and an array of electrodes that charge and manipulate the balls face the display to charge them so that images programmed at the electrodes are left thereon.

摘要: A system and method of providing and using an overloaded card with overloaded card services. A card terminal reads a host card, and a server system determines whether or not to overload the host card with a card service of one other card. The server system overloads the host card with the other card services by associating the other card services with the host card within the server system such that no additional information must be encoded within or maintained by the host card.

摘要: A method, system and computer program product to facilitate royalty collection with respect to online distribution of electronically published material over a computer network. In one embodiment, a method for managing use of a digital file (that includes content subject to copyright protection on behalf of some content provider) begins by establishing a count of a number of permitted copies of the digital file. In response to a given protocol, a copy of the digital file is then selectively transferred from a source to a target. Thus, for example, the source and target may be located on the same computer with the source being a disk storage device and the target being a rendering device (e.g., a printer, a display, a sound card or the like). The method logs an indication each time the digital file is transferred from the source to a target rendering device, and the count is decremented upon each transfer. When the count reaches a given value (e.g., zero), the file is destroyed or otherwise prevented from being transferred from the source device. The indications logged are transferred to a management server to facilitate payment of royalties to the content provider.

摘要: The location of machines in space is displayed in a three dimensional user interface. At each machine of a plurality of machines, the location of the machine is determined via a global positioning system calculation. Each machine, determining a cell corresponding to the GPS determined location. The machines broadcasting a message at a time slice allocated for the cell, wherein the message is indicative of the type of machine broadcasting. The machine which presents the interface receives broadcasted messages from the plurality of machines. Using the received broadcasted messages, it determines the locations of the plurality of machines. Next, the presentation machine chooses a representation of each machine according to a machine type. Finally, the user interface is constructed by orienting and presenting the representations within a user interface showing a volume of space according to the determined locations.

摘要: The history of browsing in a distributed database, such as the Internet, is presented in a global history window. Each document browsed is represented by a page icon selected as representative of content in the browsed document. Each link between browsed pages is represented by a roadway to connect the respective selected page icons. The user's present position is indicated by an icon or other manner. Features proximate to the user's present position may be enlarged. In the preferred embodiment, the global history map is presented on an apparently curved surface having a variety of features which serve to orient the user in the map. With each new request for retrieval of a new document, the global history map window is presented wherein the building of a new roadway serves as a progress indicator for retrieving the new document. A new page icon indicative of the content of the new document is selected. The new page icon is presented proximate to a terminus of the new roadway. An end of road icon at the terminus of the new roadway is presented once the new document is retrieved.

摘要: A data processing system connected to and controlling an infrared emitter may be utilized to control remote control devices such as video cassette recorders and cassette recorders, allowing the data processing system to program recording by such devices. The data processing system may, for example, be a set-top box located in proximity to remote controlled record/playback devices, relying on line-of-sight or reflected infrared signal transmission, or may be utilized in connection with suitably placed infrared repeaters. The data processing system may also be employed in conjunction with the “server push” network technique, in which a data stream is transmitted to a subscribing client without intervention by the client. The data stream is monitored for user-defined data items. When detected, the data processing automatically controls the appropriate record/playback device to record a broadcast associated with the detected data item.
