Abstract:
A filter installation and method, especially a seawater filter installation and method, includes at least one fluid line (18,20) for transporting a biological fluid, a filter device (54) mounted in the fluid line with at least one filter element (22) in a filter housing (10), and a device for biological decontamination. The device for biological decontamination contains active substances that can be introduced into the filter housing (10), such as inert gases or special metals, ensuring that toxic impurities cannot enter. The active substances used are ecofriendly unlike chemically produced fungicides and herbicides.
Abstract:
A two-stage, tandem, replaceable filter cartridge assembly includes an outer filter cartridge having a cylindrical shape and defining an axial bore therein, and an inner filter cartridge, also having a cylindrical shape which is received within the axial bore of the outer filter cartridge. The inner filter cartridge may be collapsible so that it can be easily inserted inside the axial bore of the outer filter cartridge, and is expandable so that in normal applications, it rests up against the inner surface of the outer filter cartridge's core, if such is included, or filter medium. One or both of the filter media of the inner and outer cartridges may be formed from an antimicrobial material. In a second embodiment, each of the inner and outer filter cartridges has top and bottom end caps which respectively are structured to mate with one another to form seals therebetween to prevent or minimize the egress of water between the mating top and bottom end caps.
Abstract:
A disc filtration system comprises a filter element containing microporous plastic discs through which liquid effluent such as wastewater is passed for filtration. The filter disc surface material contains an anti-bacterial agent exposed to the liquid being filtered for inhibiting growth of microorganisms on the exterior of the filter element. The exposure to the anti-bacterial agent inhibits microorganism growth to an extent that prolongs the useful operational filtration cycle life of the filter between backwashing cycles. The invention applies to disc filters having automatic backwashing and manually operated disc-type filters.
Abstract:
Each cap of a pair of end caps mounted on opposed ends of a conventional radial flow cylindrical filter element of a filter cartridge includes a circular sleeve extending axially from the filter element for penetrably receiving a supporting stud and for maintaining an O-ring seal therebetween. The area of one of the end caps radially outwardly of its circular sleeve is greater than the corresponding area of the other end cap to cause fluid to be filtered to pressure bias the filter cartridge toward the other end cap and to positionally retain the filter cartridge within its housing. A positioning member extending into the filter element from one of the end caps receives and stabilizes sleeve for a u/v lamp disposed within the filter element to kill any microorganisms present and to oxidize any organic matter subjected to the emitted ultra-violent radiation.
Abstract:
A system capable of cleaning and disinfecting a filter. A filter element is flushed with a disinfectant solution in a direction opposite to fluid filtration. A filter integrity test checks the integrity of the filter by pressurizing the filter.
Abstract:
An improved sintered porous thermoplastic filter incorporating a second thermoplastic treated with a non-leaching antimicrobial agent for the purification of liquids. The method of making the filter is also disclosed.

Abstract:
This invention relates to systems for leaching liquid waste, particularly waste water. More particularly this invention relates to a specially designed cylindrical conduit or pipe for use in leaching systems. Even more particularly the invention relates to cylindrical conduit which has apertures/skimmer tabs created either during the manufacture/forming/extrusion of the conduit or by punching after the forming of the conduit. Most particularly the invention is an apparatus and method for perforating corrugated plastic pipe or smooth walled plastic pipe while the pipe is in the process of extrusion. Further and even most particularly the invention is an actuatable perforator/skimmer tab former which may be timely actuated to cause the perforation of the wall of pipe wherein the plastic of the portion being perforated is semi-molten as, for example during the forming of the pipe or caused to be made semi-molten after formation of the pipe such as, for example, by heating of the actuatable perforator/skimmer former thereby causing the plastic to be rolled rather than cut creating thereby a perforation and skimmer tab of predetermined and selected geometry and dimension.
Abstract:
Cast semi-permeable membranes made from synthetic polymer used in reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration and microfiltration are treated with a non-leaching antimicrobial agent to prevent its bio-fouling and bacterial breakthrough. The semi-permeable membranes include a polymeric material and a non-leaching antimicrobial agent that is incorporated into and homogeneously distributed throughout the polymeric material. The polymeric material, in the case of one membrane, may be cellulose acetate. In the case of thin film composite polyamide membranes, the antimicrobial agent is incorporated in a microporous polysulfone layer that is sandwiched between a reinforcing fabric and an ultrathin polyamide material. The invention also includes a treatment of flat and hollow fiber semipermeable membranes made with polysulfones and polyvinylidene fluoride.
