A system for converting a first representation of a color input image to a second representation and method for performing same are disclosed. The system includes apparatus for mapping primary axes and overprint axes of a selected color coordinate system to primary axes and overprint axes of a printer color coordinate system of the second representation, thereby to produce primary conversion tables and overprint conversion tables and apparatus for converting the first representation to the second representation utilizing the primary and overprint conversion tables. The system also includes printing apparatus for printing the second representation and for producing an output print, wherein the output print is a reproduction of the color input image within the selected color coordinate system. Furthermore, the system enables selection of operator-selected appearance parameters used to match desired printer conditions in accordance with the appearance parameters.

A computer imaging system for calibration of scanners and printers. A calibration image is stored and manipulated as desired, and printed out as a resultant calibration picture. The resultant calibration picture is input to the system to create a resultant calibration image. A comparison is made between the original calibration image and the resultant calibration image, yielding calibration data indicating the distortion introduced by the hardware and software combination used in the calibration process. The calibration data is then used in a correction stage wherein a picture is input to the system, anti-distorted utilizing the calibration data, and an output picture provided with the anti-distorted data causing the output picture to appear substantially identical to the input picture. Alternatively, the calibration data is used together with a second set of calibration data generated by comparing an input calibration picture with known accurate data values corresponding to the calibration picture. The second set of calibration data is representative of the distortions caused by the input device only. The first and second sets of calibration data are combined, providing a third set of calibration data which represents distortions introduced by the output device only. The second and third sets of calibration data are used during normal operation of the system to provide computer images adjusted for the distortions which would otherwise be introduced by the input device, and which provide output pictures adjusted for the distortions which would otherwise be introduced by the output device.

The image formation apparatus also outputs save location information associated with the test chart. The save location information identifies at least a memory device of an apparatus other than the image formation apparatus as a save location to save the data for performance correction. The image formation apparatus corrects performance of the image formation apparatus using the data for performance correction that is obtained from the location identified by the save location information.

Certain methods and systems are described to provide color modelling. This color modelling applies to halftone images. In one example, a correction parameter for a color model is determined by minimizing a distance metric between a set of estimated spectral reflectance values and a set of measured spectral reflectance values to generate a multi-dimensional correction parameter. This enables a color model to be used to map at least one Neugebauer Primary area coverage value to at least one spectral reflectance value.

Each rendering device has a color measurement instrument for calibrating the color presented by the rendering device. A rendering device may be a printer in which the measuring of color samples on a sheet rendered by the printer is provided by a sensor coupled to a transport mechanism which moves the sensor and sheet relative to each other, where the sensor provides light from the samples to a spectrograph. A rendering device may also be a display having a member supporting a color measuring instrument for receiving light from an area of the screen. The color measuring instruments provide for non-contact measurements of color samples rendered on a display or a sheet, and are self-calibrating by the use of calibration references.

A system and method for harmonizing evaluation results between a plurality of separate digital data gathering devices includes first and second digital data gathering devices each having a lens through which the digital data gathering devices are operative to accept incoming light. The system further includes a calibration device to perform a first initial calibration of the first digital data gathering device during a first initial calibration exposure of the first digital data gathering device, and a second initial calibration of the second digital data gathering device during a second initial calibration exposure of the second digital data gathering device. The first and the second digital data gathering devices adjust subsequent exposures in dependence upon the first and the second initial calibrations, such that the subsequent exposures obtained by the first and the second digital data gathering devices are harmonized with one another through use of the common calibration device.
