Abstract: An extracorporeal system for lung assist includes a housing having a blood flow inlet in fluid connection with a pressurizing stator compartment within the housing. A fiber bundle compartment within the housing is above and in fluid connection with the pressurizing stator compartment via a flow channel formed within the housing and extending from the pressurizing stator compartment to an inlet manifold of the fiber bundle compartment. A blood flow outlet in is fluid connection with an outlet man fold of the fiber bundle compartment. The blood flow inlet extends through the housing parallel to a plane of rotation of an impeller in the pressurizing stator compartment. The blood flow inlet turns to deliver blood into a central portion of the impeller. A has inlet is in fluid connection with the housing and in fluid connection with inlets of the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers of a cylindrical fiber bundle positioned within the fiber bundle compartment. A gas outlet is in fluid connection with the housing and in fluid connection with outlets of the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers.

Polymers may be utilized for substained or targeted drug delivery vehicles, scaffolding for tissue engineering, bioabsorbable sutures, or the like.

Abstract: Methods are disclosed which combine electrospinning and a sacrificial template, such as with additive manufacturing (AM), to produce fibrous microvascular scaffolds which are biodegradable, porous, and easily handled. In one example, a process for fabricating a fibrous network construct is disclosed. The method includes electrospinning a first layer of fibrous material; printing a micropatterned sacrificial template; transferring the micropatterned sacrificial template onto the electrospun fibers; electrospinning a second layer of fibrous biomaterial onto the micropatterned sacrificial template thereby encapsulating the template and generating a construct with two layers; and removing the sacrificial template, producing a fibrous construct with channels or microstructures formed therein. Also disclosed are fibrous constructs and scaffolds produced by the provided methods.
