Abstract: A solenoid assembly includes a solenoid having a coil, a current sensor configured to measure the coil current, and a controller. The controller estimates the coil current using a solenoid model, with output of the solenoid model being an estimated coil current, and receives the measured coil current from the current sensor. The controller also calculates an error value having an error sign by subtracting the estimated coil current from the measured coil current. Responsive to the error value exceeding a calibrated error threshold while the control voltage deviates from a nominal value, the controller diagnoses a solenoid fault condition. Responsive to diagnosing the solenoid fault condition, the controller isolates or identifies a particular solenoid fault condition from among a plurality of possible fault conditions, and records a diagnostic code indicative of the particular solenoid fault condition.

Abstract: An electric motor includes a rotor having a stack of laminations positioned axially relative to one another. The stack of laminations includes a first rotor lamination that is divided into a first portion and a second portion. The first rotor lamination is configured to have an asymmetric mass distribution such that the first portion has a first mass and the second portion has a second mass, with the first mass being different from the second mass. The electric motor is configured to selectively generate an unbalanced force during operation (i.e., when the rotor is spinning). The electric motor may include a stator configured to have an asymmetric magnetic field distribution. The electric motor may be employed in a haptic assembly and eliminates the need for a separate eccentric mass to generate a haptic signal.

Abstract: An apparatus for flexible DC fast charging of an electrified vehicle includes a charge receptacle and a vehicle charging controller programmed to establish a wireless communication with a charging station. The apparatus further includes a reconfigurable energy storage system selectively and electrically connected to the charge receptacle. The reconfigurable energy storage system includes a first rechargeable energy storage device selectively and electrically connected to the charge receptacle, a second rechargeable energy storage device selectively connected to the charge receptacle, and a plurality of low-loss switching devices selectively connected to the first rechargeable energy storage device and the second rechargeable energy storage device. The vehicle charging controller is programmed to selectively actuate the plurality of low-loss switching devices based on the charging voltage of the charging station such that a nominal voltage of the reconfigurable energy storage system matches the charging voltage of the charging station.

Abstract: A hybrid vehicle propulsion includes an engine and a first electric machine, where each is configured to selectively provide torque to propel the vehicle. The propulsion system also includes a second electric machine coupled to the engine to provide torque to start the engine from an inactive state. A high-voltage power source is configured to power both of the first electric machine and the second electric machine over a high-voltage bus. The propulsion system further includes a controller programmed to deactivate the engine and propel the vehicle using the first electric machine in response to the vehicle being driven at a steady-state speed for a predetermined duration of time. The controller is also programmed to restart the engine using the second electric machine powered by the high-voltage power source.

Abstract: An interior permanent magnet electric machine includes a stator having a plurality of teeth disposed around a circumference oriented radially towards a center defining slots interposed between each of the teeth, and a conductive winding wrapped around each of the teeth of the stator to receive an electrical current. The electric machine also includes a rotor which is rotatable relative to the stator. The rotor defines a plurality of openings to receive permanent magnets near an outer portion of the rotor and a number of spokes interposed between mass reduction cutouts located closer to the center relative to the permanent magnets. Each of the permanent magnets defines a magnetic pole and each of the spokes is circumferentially aligned with one of the magnetic poles.

Abstract: An electrodynamic apparatus for separating electrically conductive, non-ferrous, blanks includes a linear induction machine (LIM) stator, a polyphase power source, and a controller. Stator slots are wound with polyphase AC windings. The power source outputs a polyphase voltage or current. The controller supplies the windings with the voltage or current via the power source to induce an electric current in an uppermost blank and produce a traveling wave magnetic field. The electric current and magnetic field generate a force on the uppermost blank sufficient for separating the uppermost blank from an adjacent blank in the stack. A method for separating the blanks includes positioning the stack with respect to the apparatus and supplying the windings with AC voltage or current via the power source to generate the traveling wave magnetic field and induce the electric current, and ultimately generate the force on the uppermost blank.

Abstract: Disclosed are electromagnetic apparatuses for separating non-ferrous blanks, methods for making and for using such apparatuses, and automated systems with electromagnetic destacking unit for handling stacks of non-ferrous blanks. Presented is a destacking unit with a magnet placed adjacent a stack of non-ferrous blanks, and two electrical terminals placed in contact with the top blank of the stack. The magnet generates a magnetic field across the surface of the top blank. The terminals pass electrical current through the blank transversely across the top surface. The direction of the electrical current is generally normal to the direction of the magnetic field such that a magnetic separation force sufficient to displace the blank from the stack is generated in a generally vertical direction.

Abstract: An electric drive unit includes a housing and a rotor rotatably supported in the housing. The rotor includes a rotor shaft defining a rotor axis and a plurality of rotor laminations fixedly mounted to the shaft. The plurality of rotor laminations support a plurality of magnetic poles, and a hydraulic unit connected to the plurality of rotor laminations. The hydraulic unit has a magnetic shunt that is selectively shiftable relative to the plurality of magnetic poles. A position sensing system is operable to detect a rotational speed of the rotor and a position of the magnetic shunt relative to the plurality of magnetic poles. The position sensing system includes a rotor shaft position trigger coupled for rotation with the rotor shaft, and a magnetic shunt position trigger supported by the hydraulic unit.
