Abstract: A rotary electric machine includes a stator with a stator winding, a rotor with a field winding supported for rotation about a rotation axis relative to the stator, and an excitation winding. The excitation winding is fixed relative to the rotor and is electrically connected to the field winding. The rotor defines a coolant channel having an inlet and an outlet. Liquid coolant enters the inlet and flows outwardly through a portion of the excitation winding to conduct heat away from the excitation winding. Generators, aircraft electrical systems, and methods of cooling rotary electric machines are also described.

Abstract: A terminal lead support for use in an integrated drive generator has a body defining an outer end extending to two outer angled surfaces. The outer angled surfaces each extend to curved end portions. The curved end portions connect the outer angled surfaces into inner angled surfaces. The inner angled surfaces each extend into cupped portions formed about a radius. There are six apertures formed within the body, with laterally outer apertures spaced from the outer surface by a greater amount than laterally intermediate apertures. The laterally intermediate apertures are spaced from the outer surface by a greater amount than laterally inner apertures. An integrated drive generator and a method of replacing a terminal lead support are also disclosed.

Abstract: A terminal block for use in an integrated drive generator has a body having an outer support surface and extending to an inner surface. There are four connection channels for supporting electric connections for each of three phases of power and a neutral. There are fingers formed between adjacent ones of each of the four connection channels, with the fingers extending away from the support surface in a direction away from the inner surface. An integrated drive generator and a method are also disclosed.

Abstract: An inner bearing race has a body extending from a first end to a second end. An inner bearing race surface defined between a pair of lands extends radially outwardly of the inner bearing race surface, with one of the lands extending to the second end. The bearing race surface is defined by inner face surfaces of the lands. The inner bearing race surface extends for an axial distance between the inner facing surfaces along a central axis C of the body and defines a first distance. A second distance defines an outer diameter of the inner bearing race surface is defined as a second distance and a ratio of the first distance to the second distance being between 0.20 and 0.30. An integrated drive generator and a method are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method of driving an integrated drive generator is provided. The method includes driving a carrier shaft of an epicyclic differential and a variable component of a hydraulic trimming device that is operably coupled to a sun gear of the epicyclic differential. The method also includes driving a generator with an output ring gear that is maintained at a constant output frequency. The method further includes maintaining the constant output frequency by controllably manipulating the speed of the sun gear that is in operable communication with the output ring gear.

Abstract: A valve assembly for a variable frequency generator includes an input shaft extending about a longitudinal axis and having a bore defined therein. Also included is a disconnect shaft extending about the longitudinal axis and disposed in abutment with the input shaft. Further included is an oil restrictor disposed with the bore of the input shaft. Yet further included is a vent valve disposed within the bore and in abutment with the oil restrictor, the vent valve comprising an angled wall, the angled wall partially defining an annulus. Also included is a plurality of ball bearings disposed within the annulus, the plurality of ball bearings sliding radially outwardly away from the longitudinal axis during rotational operation of the input shaft to apply a force on the angled wall of the vent valve to bias the vent valve axially into a sealed condition.

Abstract: Embodiments herein relate to piece-part, sub-assembly, assembly, and component levels of a differential composed of a sun gear configuration and utilized in an integrated drive generator. An integrated drive generator is a hydro-mechanical transmission that drives a synchronous salient pole generator. The integrated drive generator is a constant speed output, variable speed input transmission that includes the differential and a hydraulic unit. In general, the integrated drive generator utilizes the variable speed input from an accessory gear box of an engine to drive or control a hydraulic unit, which in turn drives or controls a churn leg member of the differential. As the differential is driven, speeds of each speed member of the differential are then summed to generate the constant speed output to drive the synchronous salient pole generator.
