Therefore, the compressor is capable of switching between a state where improving the displacement controllability is prioritized and a state where reduction of mechanical loss between the swash plate and the shoes is prioritized.

The annular space is located between the head and the skirt. A recess is located on the inner wall of a front housing and extends longitudinally in the axial direction of the piston. A projection is integrally formed on the skirt of the piston to engage with the recess. Rotation of the piston about its axis with respect to the cylinder bore is restricted by the engagement of the projection with the recess. A force acting on the piston in a direction transverse to the axis of the piston is received by the recess through the projection.

The compressor has a drive plate located in a crank chamber and mounted on a drive shaft and a piston operably coupled to the drive plate and located in a cylinder bore. The drive plate converts rotation of the drive shaft to reciprocating movement of the piston in the cylinder bore to vary the capacity of the cylinder bore. The piston compresses gas supplied to the cylinder bore and discharges the compressed gas from the compressor by way of a discharge chamber and a discharge passage. An oil separating mechanism is disposed midway in the discharge passage to separate the oil from the gas flowing in the discharge passage. A storing chamber is defined in the lower portion of the separating mechanism to store the oil separated from the gas. A supplying passage connects the storing chamber with the crank chamber to supply the oil to the crank chamber from the storing chamber. A supplying valve is disposed midway in the supplying passage. The supplying valve opens the supplying passage to supply the oil to the crank chamber from the storing chamber when the compressor is stopped.

A swash plate type variable displacement compressor comprises cylinder bores, pistons, a suction chamber and a discharge chamber. A suction valve introduces a low pressure gas into a working chamber in each cylinder bore. A discharge valve introduces a high pressure gas in the working chamber into the discharge chamber during a compression stroke. A crank chamber communicates to each of the cylinder bores at rear sides of the pistons. A swash plate is tiltably supported on a drive shaft and connected to each of the pistons through associated rods. The swash plate makes the pistons reciprocate in response to its undulating swing motion and varies its inclination angle based upon pressure differential between pressure in the suction chamber and pressure in the crank chamber therefore adjusting discharge displacement. A gas supply passage communicates each cylinder bore to the crank chamber in order to supply gas having a lower pressure than that in the working chamber at the time of completing the compression stroke. A gas bleed passage communicates the crank chamber to the suction chamber in order to introduce gas in the crank chamber into the suction chamber. A pressure control valve is provided in the gas supply passage or the gas bleed passage to control pressure of gas in the crank chamber. A valve is provided for opening and closing the gas supply passage in the middle of the compression stroke of each of the pistons.
