A "line-of-light" vehicle lighting system employs a moveable mask to control the beam pattern formed by an plurality of fiber optic light bundles coupled to a single high intensity light source. The lighting system comprises a single high intensity light source coupled to forward illumination devices by means of optical light conducting devices. The forward illumination devices include an arrangement of connectors, a mask member and lens elements. The connectors lodge fiber optic light bundles branched off from the optical light conducting devices and emit light through respective apertures. The mask has a plurality of openings for selectively exposing portions of the apertures which, in combination with the lens elements, form the beam pattern. The mask is moveable between two positions to register first and second openings in the mask with associated apertures to form the high and low beam patterns of the forward lighting system.

An electrodeless neon discharge light source having a red color light output is provided for use in automotive applications. The light source has a lamp envelope containing a fill of neon gas which, when excited to a discharge state by introduction of an operating signal over a tuned circuit consisting of a resonant capacitor and a ferrite coil, produces a red color light output. A flash control input to a ballast circuit arrangement provides the ability to control the light output using bursts of high frequency sinusoidal energy. The use of the burst signal approach allows for providing varying levels of light intensity output thereby signifying the distinction between braking conditions and an on condition of the tail light. Furthermore, by controlling the rate of flashing of the light source, an indication of a hard braking or emergency condition, could be conveyed.

A projection headlamp system is capable of projecting a wide spread controlled pattern of light for accommodating low and high beam illuminations. The projection headlamp system includes a curved reflector and a gas discharge lamp. The curved reflector has first and second optical focal points associated therewith positioned along an optical axis. The first focal point is within and closer to the curved reflector than the second focal point which is spaced from the reflector. The lamp is disposed within the curved reflector at the first focal point thereof and along the optical axis. The lamp is operable for generating light. The curved reflector is operable for receiving a substantial portion of the light generated by the lamp and for directing the light along the optical axis toward the second focal point thereof. An optical element such as a mask or mask-shaped mirror is positioned along the optical axis approximately at the second focal point of the reflector for creating an image of a well-defined sharp cutoff within the light from the reflector. A light projecting lens is positioned along the optical axis and spaced from the optical element at a distance approximately equal to the focal length of the lens for receiving light from the second focal point and projecting the light as a wide spread controlled pattern containing the image of the well-defined sharp cutoff to thereby provide a low beam illumination for vehicular use.

A projection headlamp system for a vehicle includes a high beam subsystem and a low beam subsystem. Each of the high and low beam subsystems includes a pair of light pattern projecting arrangements, a remote single arc discharge light source, a pair of solid optical coupling devices, and a pair of elongated light distributing conductors coupled at output ends to the pair of light pattern projecting arrangements and coupled at input ends to the pair of solid optical coupling devices. The high and low beam subsystems employ either separate single arc discharge light sources or a common single arc discharge light source.

A lamp containing a fill of xenon, mercury and metal halide is disclosed which serves as a light source for lighting applications and is particularly suitable for automotive forward lighting applications. The xenon ingredient operates to provide for instant light necessary for automotive applications, whereas, the mercury and metal halide ingredients operate to provide for a long life, high efficiency lamp relative to either a xenon or tungsten lamp. The dimensions of the xenon-metal halide lamp of the present invention are approximately three-fifths (3/5) of those of a typical tungsten lamp utilized for automotive forward lighting applications. The reduced dimensions of the xenon-metal halide lamp allows for correspondingly reduced dimensions of a related reflector for such a xenon-metal halide lamp which accommodates the needs of aerodynamically styled automobiles.

A thin, efficient and uniform illuminator for large areas comprises a plastic wedge of a series of plastic wedges applied to or formed integrally with a back surface of an area to be illuminated. Light is collected and concentrated from a high efficiency light source. The concentrated light is focused as an input to one or more light guides. The light guides may be optical fibers. The light guides or fibers are fused or mated in some other way to an edge or edges of an optically clear plastic wedge or wedges. The wedge shape increases the angle of the internal reflections of the edge coupled light per unit distance and intercepts more of the light as the wedge gets thinner. To further enhance the uniformity of the illuminating light, light scattering centers may be added to the surface or volume of the wedge. The number of scattering centers over the illuminating surface of the wedge or within the volume of the wedge may be increased along the distance moving away from the light source.

Flush and pump flush processes yielding light sources for incandescent and metal vapor discharge lamps are disclosed. The flush and pump flush processes also yield lamps that are particularly suitable for deposition of a reflective coating on its outer surface. For such reflective coated light sources, the associated lamp leads are encased in glass and therefore are protected against any deleterious reactions that may otherwise result from the deposition of the reflective coating process. The light sources yielded by the flush and pump flush processes of the present invention are advantageous in reducing the mounting arrangement of the lamps in which the light sources are housed.

A metal halide lamp having a vacuum shroud is disclosed. The vacuum shroud substantially eliminates the detrimental catephoresis effects of operating a metal halide lamp from a low frequency alternating current (A.C.) source or direct current (D.C.) sources, reduces the sodium migration losses typically experienced with a metal halide lamp, reduces the photoelectrons contribution to sodium losses for the metal halide lamp, reduces the detrimental effects of the hydrogen and water that may be within the general confines of such a metal halide lamp, and provides a containment function for an inner envelope that may be operated at a relatively high pressure and possibly experience rupturing to cause the dislodgment of the ruptured material to possibly fracture a glass member confining the metal halide lamp.

A multiplexed transmission scheme that reduces the complexity of the normal electrical wiring harness of a vehicle is disclosed. The system directly routes electrical excitation to motorize devices and multiplexes the control of the motorized devices along with the control of lighting devices by means of an optical transmission scheme having a high intensity light source as its source of light energy. Various devices are disclosed that interface with a control buss, light busses, and power buss all related to the multiplexed system. Further disclosed are related optical devices that allow the operator of a vehicle to provide commands to the multiplexed transmission scheme so as to provide control of all of the operator selected electrical devices of the vehicle.
