    摘要: A stream of complex numbers is converted into polar form, including an amplitude-representative part and a phase-representative part. The amplitude-representative part of each of the converted complex numbers is represented as a plurality of digits of decreasing numerical significance. The phase-representative part of each of the converted complex numbers is phase-modulated at the radio carrier frequency to produce a phase-modulated drive signal. The phase-modulated drive signal is amplified in a plurality of power amplifiers. A respective one of the power amplifiers provides a maximum output power level at a respective amplifier output that is related to a respective one of the decreasing numerical significance. The output amplitude of a respective one of the plurality of power amplifiers is controlled by applying a respective one of the plurality of digits of decreasing numerical significance to a respective one of the plurality of power amplifiers. The amplifier outputs of the plurality of power amplifiers are combined to form the modulated radio power signal.

First, a GEO satellite is launched to provide initial system capacity. Next, MEO satellites are successively launched into positions where they can supplement the coverage of the GEO satellite during peak traffic hours. Finally, when a sufficient number of MEO satellites are in place, the GEO satellite can provide the supplementary capacity.

    摘要: A transmitter is provided for simultaneously transmitting a plurality of signals in a plurality of directive beams to corresponding destination stations, each destination station located in a separate fan within a service area. The transmitter includes a plurality of beamformers, each beamformer receiving one of the signals to be transmitted to an associated fan, each of the beamformers having a plurality of outputs for each different signal to be transmitted. A plurality of Butler matrices each receive one of the plurality of outputs from the plurality of beamformers for each different signal to be transmitted, each Butler matrix having a plurality of outputs in phased relationship to one another, wherein each of the signals to be transmitted is simultaneously provided across the outputs of each Butler matrix in a phased relationship. An antenna is provided with an aperture within which a two-dimensional array of antenna elements are disposed, wherein equal fractions of adjacent antenna elements are connected to the outputs of each Butler matrix, and wherein each of the plurality of signals are simultaneously transmitted by the entire two-dimensional array of antenna elements. Each of the plurality of beamformers receives steering control signals for steering the direction of each beam within its respective fan.

    摘要: A method of directing a call to a mobile telephone in a dual mode cellular satellite communications network is disclosed. An alert signal is transmitted to the mobile telephone using base stations of the cellular network if the mobile telephone is currently registered as active in a cellular network. When the alert signal is received at the mobile telephone, the mobile telephone transmits a response to the cellular network as an acknowledgement. When an acknowledgement is not received by the cellular network within a defined period of time, the cellular network transmits the last known location of the mobile telephone to the satellite earth station. Upon receipt of the last known location of the mobile telephone, the satellite earth station using the last known location determines a satellite antenna beam most likely to be received by the mobile telephone and transmits an alert signal to the mobile telephone via the satellite using the antenna beam.

    摘要: Method and apparatus for mitigating intermodulation distortion effects in frequency division multiple access (FDMA) communications systems. In one embodiment, an effective transmit power level is determined for each communication signal to be transmitted, and signals are allocated to frequency channels such that a smooth tapering of transmit power levels across contiguous frequency channels is achieved. Such smooth power tapering across frequency channels minimizes the possibility that two high power signals will generate an intermodulation distortion product sufficient to disrupt transmission of an immediately adjacent low power signal. In another exemplary embodiment, communication signals are allocated such that high power signals are positioned near a frequency band center, while low power signals are positioned near frequency band edges. As a result, intermodulation distortion between frequency bands in a multiple-band communication system is also minimized.

    摘要: A frequency synthesizer has a phase locked loop, a .DELTA..SIGMA. modulator, and a filter. The phase locked loop includes a frequency divider that controls the frequency of the phase locked loop output signal. The output of the .DELTA..SIGMA. modulator is fed through the filter and the output of the filter is used to control a division factor in the frequency divider. Compensation may be performed at the input to the .DELTA..SIGMA. modulator in order to compensate for the filtering performed between the .DELTA..SIGMA. modulator and the frequency divider. The filter may be used to reduce quantization noise in an input to the frequency divider, and thereby reduces phase noise in an output of the phase locked loop.
