An articulating band saw apparatus provides a frame that includes a vertically extending section having upper and lower end portions. An elevator moves between the upper and lower end portions of the frame. A first hydraulic actuator is supported on the elevator for movement therewith. A first arm provides arm end portions, the first arm supported by the first hydraulic actuator. An end of the first arm supporting a second hydraulic actuator that is spaced away from the first hydraulic actuator. The second hydraulic actuator supports a second arm. An endless band type saw is mounted on the free end of the second arm generally opposite the second actuator. The band saw is movable by articulation of the first and second actuators and resulting movement of the first and second arms. In one embodiment, the band saw is a diamond wire saw.

Concave/convex portions are consecutively formed on a back of a band saw blade. The concave/convex portions include concave portions engageable with and disengageable from a backup guide of a band saw guide unit, and convex portions adjacent to the concave portions. A length of each of the concave/convex portions is configured to be equal to or smaller than four times a maximum pitch of a tooth top of each tooth.

An active measurement and control system for a material cutting apparatus. The apparatus comprises a cutting tool which may be pivoted for cutting a workpiece in a cutting area at a selectable angle. The cutting area defines a datum plane, and a feed table with a shuttle vise is used to move the workpiece toward the cutting area. A controller controls the feed distance of the shuttle vise and the cutting angle of the tool in response to a signal from a sensor used for sensing a transverse dimension of the workpiece relative to the datum plane. In this way, the feed distance and cutting angle are adjusted to compensate for variations in the transverse dimension. This transverse dimension can include a displacement from the datum plane of a distal and/or proximate surface of the workpiece. A method of cutting a workpiece is also disclosed.

A band saw with a complex coordination of a tilting motion and a translational motion between the workpiece and the band saw blade, so that a curved cut is made in the workpiece. The geometric parameters of the cut can be continuously adjusted. This makes it possible to optimize a contact length of the saw blade in the workpiece, which is an important factor in the cutting process. It is thus possible to saw workpieces made of stone and similar materials that are typically difficult to cut. The cut and the contact length of the saw blade can be tailored individually to each workpiece to be sawed. Thus, workpieces of different geometrical dimensions and different material properties, in particular with different material hardnesses, can be processed using the band saw according to the invention without having to undertake significant changes.

In a method and a system for determining the feeding sped when bandsaw cutting a workpiece, the tough pitch TP of the bandsaw blade is determined in a first unit (6) depending on the shape and dimensions of the workpiece. In a second unit (12) feeding depth per tooth is determined depending on properties of the workpiece material and the width of the bandsaw blade. The bandsaw blade velocity BS is determined in a third unit (22) from the width W of the workpiece and the hardness of the workpiece material, whereafter the cutting time T is determined in a first calculating unit (30) from the height H of the workpiece, the feeding depth per tooth, the tooth pitch TP and the blade velocity BS. In a second calculating unit (32) the feeding speed MH for the bandsaw blade is then determined by the equation MHnullH/T. A computer program, when executed on a computer, performs this determination of the feeding speed when cutting a workpiece with a bandsaw from supplied input data.

摘要:
A horizontal bandsaw is mounted in a tool carrier above a workpiece location. Before it starts cutting the bandsaw is tilted an angle between 3.degree. and 10.degree. and after the initial cut that angle is maintained during the rest of the cut until the intended depth of cut is reached or closely approached, when the saw tilt is removed as the structure containing the bandsaw is swung to orient the bandsaw horizontally. If the depth of cut is a complete cut through, the advantage of a minimum erosion of the center selvage of the workpiece support is assured. Mechanical limits are provided for the vertical displacement by tilt at one side of the workpiece and on that side one of the guides of the structure supporting the bandsaw has a hydraulic changeover control in which the angle of tilt is set by adjustable screw-stops which cooperate with stop plates mounted on the structure supporting the bandsaw.

A workability detection method for a workpiece consisting of the steps of cutting a workpiece, based on specified cutting conditions, detecting the cutting resistance during the cutting operation, or the cutting time or the amount of tool wear to make a cut up to a specified position of the workpiece, or the feeding position of the cutting tool on a workpiece or the amount of processing of the cutting tool after a specified cutting time and comparing the detected data with corresponding data which is stored in a data base.

A method and apparatus for controlling the cutting feed of band saw machines for obtaining an optimum feed rate with the same safety against straying of the saw cut, according to which the saw band is maintained continuously within the area of its teeth under a residual tensile stress (.sigma..sub.Z.sbsb.Res) adjusted at least approximately to a constant value. For this purpose, a desired value is selected for the residual tensile stress, determined experimentally under practical conditions, which is correspondingly converted in case of load conditions of the saw blade deviating from the experiment, and this desired value is compared with the actual value. The actual value (.sigma..sub.Z.sbsb.Res) is derived as a difference from the tensile stress (Z) in the critical saw band point and the bending stress .sigma..sub.B caused by the feed, to be .sigma..sub.Z.sbsb.Res =.sigma.Z-.sigma.B>0. The actual value is adjusted to the desired value by varying the feed rate; the sum total of all feed forces or the sagging angle of the saw band is selected as a measure for the actual value. As a result thereof the danger of straying is precluded and yet an economically optimal feed rate is attained in band saws.

The vertical elongate rod is so designed as to be brought into and out of contact with the material to be cut in order to automatically determine the upper limit of the vertical movement of the bandsaw blade and automatically control the lowering speed of the bandsaw blade during its idle time.
