A stator for a helicoidal down-hole drilling motor is formed with a through-hole, in addition to the main stator bore. The through-hole can be a straight hole extending parallel to the axis of the stator, or a hole of helical form, the helix extending about the axis of the stator. The through-hole can be used to accommodate a communications cable extending through the through-hole, and/or the through-hole can be connected to a fluid supply. The stator is produced from metal-based powder by producing an insert of accurate dimensions corresponding to the dimensions of a bore to be created in the finished stator, the bore having a length of at least 750 mm, supporting the insert within a mould cavity, filling the mould cavity with metal-based powder, subjecting the powder to isostatic pressing, and subsequently removing the material of the insert.

The present invention recites a downhole motor and method of fabricating the same, wherein the method for fabricating a stator for a downhole motor includes the providing of a mandrel having an outer geometry that is complimentary to a desired inner geometry for the stator and the application of a flexible sleeve over the mandrel. Additionally, a stator tube having an interior surface is provided and a bonding agent is applied to the interior surface of the stator tube. The flexible sleeve and the mandrel are placed in the stator tube and a reinforcing material is introduced into the stator tube to fill space between the flexible sleeve and the stator tube. The reinforcing material is solidified and serves to bond the reinforcing material to the flexible sleeve and the stator tube.

A membrane actuator includes a magnetically actuatable membrane and a magnetic trigger. The membrane includes a shape memory alloy (SMA), and the magnetic trigger is configured to induce a martensitic transformation in the SMA, to produce a larger force than would be achievable with non-SMA-based materials. Such a membrane actuator can be beneficially incorporated into a wide variety of devices, including fluid pumps, shock absorbing systems, and synthetic jet producing devices for use in an aircraft. The membrane/diaphragm can be formed from a ferromagnetic SMA, or a ferromagnetic material can be coupled with an SMA such that the SMA and the ferromagnetic material move together. A hybrid magnetic trigger, including a permanent magnet and an electromagnet, is preferably used for the magnetic trigger, as hybrid magnetic triggers are easy to control, and produce larger magnetic gradients than permanent magnets or electromagnets alone.

By virtue of the smaller component size in the case of plastic or due to the choice of metal as material for the nozzle insert, the nozzle duct can be provided with a particularly small diameter. The suction jet pump has a particularly low propellant consumption.
