High-frequency waves transmitted by a rotating antenna array at a ground tion are intercepted by an airborne receiver for photoelectric evaluation by one or more discs whose light transmissivity, by translumination or reflection, varies periodically according to a sinusoidal law in one diametral direction while being constant in another diametral direction orthogonal thereto. The disc or discs are rotated at a speed corresponding to that of the transmitting antenna array, under the control of periodic synchronizing pulses, and are illuminated by a flux modulated by an electrical signal derived from the incoming wave, this signal containing a phase component dependent on two spatial coordinates such as elevational and azimuthal angles determining the relative position of the ground transmitter and the airborne receiver. The flux optically filtered by any such disc has a peak at a point determined by the spatial coordinates whereby the relative position can be visualized by a display device such as a vidicon camera and an associated oscilloscope screen. Parasitic components due to reflections from moving objects can be suppressed by integration of the optically filtered flux over a limited period.

The invention is a detector for radio signals which have been transmitted through a multipath medium. The device operates in conjunction with the radio frequency portion of a receiver to detect digital signals which have been transmitted in known modulation formats. The transmitted signal is constructed by assigning known and distinct modulation waveforms to a sequence of message symbols, or digits. The basic digital message, which the detector is to reconstruct consists of a sequence of digits, each lasting for a fixed time, say T seconds, and each picked from an alphabet of arbitrary, but fixed, size. For example, in a binary message, the alphabet consists of the digits 0 and 1. In a quarternary message, the alphabet consists of the digits 0, 1, 2 and 3.

A communications system and method for transmitting and receiving two independently timed (asynchronous) binary data signals on a quadriphase carrier. The four phase ambiguity ordinarily resulting from quadriphase transmission and reception is overcome by uniquely identifying one input channel, for example, by slightly increasing the clock rate of the channel. In reception each channel is demodulated and the data rate of each channel is examined to identify the increased clock rate channel. That channel is then returned to its original clock rate.

A circuit arrangement to eliminate the phase ambiguity at a receive terminal in phase-shift keying binary transmission systems. The received PSK binary signal is simultaneously applied to a conventional synchronous demodulator and a so-called nonambiguous demodulator which may be in analog or digital form. The outputs from both demodulators are compared to provide a signal having a first state when both demodulator outputs are in phase and having a second state when said demodulator outputs are in phase opposition. Logic means are provided to detect the state of the comparison signal in order to control inverter means adapted to reverse the demodulated original message from the synchronous demodulator when said comparison signal is in its second state.

A frame synchronization technique for a phase-difference modulation communication system. A carrier wave is phasedifference modulated in accordance with information signals emanating from a plurality of information channels and subsequently time-division multiplexed into a series of time frames. The time-division multiplexed signal is then stepwise phase difference modulated to provide a stepwise shift at a rate corresponding to the length of a time frame. This stepwise phase shift defines each time frame. In this manner frame synchronization can be accomplished without the use of additional frame synchronization pulses.

A method and apparatus are described for demodulating phase difference modulated signals wherein a carrier is modulated by specific, different valued phase shifts corresponding to the various levels of the data signal. Mean value-coherent demodulation is used wherein the transmitted predetermined interval and the phase resulting from the phases received up to that time as the mean value for the preceding predetermined interval. A reference frequency is generated which includes all the possible phase values for the data. A pulse is triggered by a crossover of the carrier signal during the predetermined interval. At the time of the latter crossover, the phase of the received signal is compared with the mean value of phase values received during preceding predetermined intervals. A decoder is provided which, according to the coding used, forms the transmitted data signal from the aforementioned difference information.

A circuit is described for demodulating phase difference modulated carrier signals. In particular for demodulating binary coded data, which are transmitted over a carrier frequency through certain phase shifts assigned, respectively, to the various data levels. A reference oscillator is provided in the demodulator for emitting a reference frequency signal having as many phases as there are phase states which have been established for message transmission. A timing generator is adjusted to produce a scanning pulse between two phase shifts, which scanning pulse has a minimum duration equal to the period of the carrier frequency. A first store is activated for the time duration of the scanning pulse. A gating pulse is generated from a crossover of the received carrier signal during the duration of the scanning pulse, and this facilitates the input of the reference phase from the reference oscillator agreeing with the carrier phase, in binary form, into the first store. Before the next scanning pulse occurs, the binary value in the first store is transferred to a second store. A decoder is provided for forming a difference value from the values in the two stores.
