Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a rocker arm includes blanking a piece of plate to obtain a base material for forming a rocker arm body, the base material being substantially U-shaped in plan view and having two protrusions which are substantially in parallel with each other. The base material is bent until the two protrusions are confronted substantially in parallel with each other, to provide a pair of side walls having a coupling portion between the side walls. Next, the coupling portion is curved between the side walls to provide a valve engaging portion, and the free end portions of the side walls are fixedly secured to the side walls of a pivot engaging member which is a plat plate having a semi-spherical portion formed by drawing.
Abstract:
A tappet for an internal combustion engine consists of a tappet main body and a ceramic seat plate brazed to the tappet main body. The tappet main body is made up of a first part made of low carbon steel and a second part made of metal. In manufacture, the first and second parts are first welded together to constitute the tappet main body, and then the ceramic seat is brazed to the tappet main body. The low carbon steel forming the first part of the tappet main body has such a property that when carburized it can be hardened by making use of the heat for the brazing, and the metal forming the second part of the tappet main body has such a property that it can be hardened by making use of the heat for the brazing.
Abstract:
A valveless, positive displacement pump including a living hinge for angularly adjusting a pumping head with respect to a rotatable drive member is provided. A method of manufacturing such a pump is also provided. The pump includes a block to which a pumping head and drive member are mounted. The block includes a first support pivotably connected to a second support by means of an integral, flexible hinge. The pumping head is mounted to the first support while the rotatable drive member is mounted to the second support. Movement of the first support about the flexible hinge allows the stroke of the piston, and therefore the flow rate of the pump, to be adjusted. Such a pump may be manufactured by extruding the block in elongate form and then cutting it into individual sections to which pumping heads may be mounted.
Abstract:
A push rod is manufactured by projection-welding a bottom surface of an end element to a tapered annular end surface of a pipe. To prevent some inclination from arising between the bottom surface of the end element and the annular end surface of the pipe when they are tightly pressed against each other, the bottom surface is formed integrally with a plurality of rose seats of wedge shape in cross section that extend radially with respect to the axial center of the end element. Projection-welding is performed after the rose seats are brought into confronting contact with the tapered annular end surface of substantially triangular shape in cross section.
Abstract:
A low-friction, boat-type, cold-formed rocker arm is provided. The rocker arm is of generally U-shaped configuration in transverse cross section throughout most of its length. An intermediate portion of the rocker arm has a concave interior surface extending there-across with a central opening through which a shank of a pedestal extends. One end portion of the rocker arm has a concave recess facing downwardly to receive the upper end of a push rod. The other end portion of the rocker arm has a rectangular opening in the bottom thereof. An axle extends between side walls of the rocker arm above the rectangular opening and a roller is rotatably mounted on the axle and has a circumferential portion exposed at the rectangular opening. The roller engages an end of a valve stem with rolling, rather than sliding, contact, resulting in lower friction during operation of the rocker arm.
Abstract:
An arcuate anti-erosion shield of stellite or the like has an inner surface with a film supported adhesive attached thereto and gasket strips formed from a fluoroelastomer along the edges thereof. The method of repair of an eroded shield is disclosed in which the eroded shield is removed, welding material dissolved by acid, and the blade sandblasted. The film is removed from the shield and the shield installed on the turbine blade. Pressure and heat is applied to the shield to thermoset the adhesive.
Abstract:
A one-piece, cold-formed rocker arm of the cam follower type is provided. The rocker arm includes a one-piece metal body cold formed from a metal blank and being of U-shaped cross section substantially throughout its length. The body has a bottom wall with upstanding, structurally-integral side walls. An intermediate, convex portion of the bottom wall has a rectangular opening therein extending therethrough. A cam-contacting roller is rotatably mounted on an axle carried by the side walls above the rectangular opening. The roller has a circumferential surface positioned to engage a cam above the rocker arm. The rocker arm body has a downwardly-extending pin with a rounded end to receive a lifter post on which the rocker arm can pivot. The pin is affixed to the bottom wall at one end portion of the rocker arm body. The bottom wall has a shorter convex surface at another end portion with an elongate opening therein to receive an end of a valve stem.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a valve cross head adapted for mechanically translating valve opening impulses from the rocker arm of an internal combustion engine to the valve stem of the internal combustion engine. The cross head has a metal body portion and a ceramic wear pad. The ceramic wear pad includes a chemical vapor deposited transition metal film on the surface thereof whereby to permit adhesion thereof by brazing or soldering between the wear pad and the body portion.
Abstract:
A valve operating push rod for an internal combustion engine comprises a metal tube having end members with outer hardened surfaces of arcuate shape welded to the respective ends of the tube. A tubular metal member having a length slightly shorter than that of the tube is pressure fitted inside or outside the wall of the tube. At least one of the ends of the tubular member is spaced apart from the welded portion between the tube and the corresponding end member. The problem of vibration between the valve head and valve seat of the intake or exhaust valve of the engine can be minimized in this way due to the different individual vibrations of the tube and tubular member, since at least one end of the tubular member is not in contact with the corresponding welded portion.
Abstract:
A fiber-reinforced light alloy cast article for use in various mechanical parts such as, for example, a connecting rod, a rocker arm, and so forth in an internal combustion engine. The composite light alloy cast article includes therein a portion filled with a shaped body made of an inorganic fiber material of high elasticity and high mechanical strength, and another portion filled with a shaped body of inorganic fibers having low elasticity and high hardness and having an appropriate bulk density suited for required purposes, the fiber-shaped bodies being filled in the required portions of the composite light alloy cast article by high pressure solidification casting.
