Abstract:
To provide an inner shim that is unlikely to fall off from a spring retainer even when an anomalous operation of a valve occurs. A spring retainer fixed to the upper end portion of a valve shaft has a shim-attachment hole. An inner shim is fitted into the shim-attachment hole. The bottom face of the inner shim is in contact with the upper end portion of the valve shaft, and the top face of the inner shim is positioned below the upper edge of the shim-attachment hole. A tappet is disposed above the spring retainer, and is allowed to move freely in the axial direction of the valve shaft. A shim-holding projection sticks out from the under face of the tappet, and extends downward. The projection enters, from above, the inside of the shim-attachment hole, and is in contact with the top face of the inner shim.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a process for producing a wear-resistant coating and to a wear-resistant coating on predetermined surfaces of machine or engine parts, in particular for internal combustion engines, which are exposed to frictional wear, comprising at least one nanocrystalline functional layer (4) made up of at least two CrNx phases for reducing friction and increasing the wear resistance of the predetermined surface (2) of the machine or engine part (1).

Abstract:
A tappet is used in an internal combustion engine. A cam-slidably-contacting member is placed on a top wall of a tappet body via diffusing material that includes a mixture of one or more elements of Zn, Mg, Sn, Cu and Pb. The cam-slidably-contacting member and the tappet body are pressed with the diffusing material held therebetween, so that the diffusing material is diffused into the tappet body and the cam-slidably-contacting member until the layer of the diffusing material does not substantially remain, and a tappet of high strength is formed.
Abstract:
A tappet made of light metal comprises a ceiled cylindrical tappet body made of light metal, and a cam receiving plate made of hard metal which has the same outer diameter as that of the tappet body, and which is provided at its outer peripheral edge with a sharp annular piece, the cam receiving plate being integrally coupled to the tappet body by causing the annular piece to bite into the top surface and welding the annular piece and the top surface. With this structure, the tappet body and the cam receiving plate made of different materials can be bonded strongly.
Abstract:
A mechanical valve tappet for timing the valves of an internal combustion engine comprising a cup-shaped housing (1), consisting of a hollow cylindrical wall (2) closed at one end by a bottom (3) which is exteriorly contacted by a control cam (6), while on the inner surface of the bottom (3), there is arranged an elevation (4) which cooperates with the end of a valve stem of a gas exchange valve (5) and while the other dimensions of the valve tappet remain unchanged, the elevation is made in each case with a different axial extent whereby the valve clearance can be adjusted without the adjusting elements hitherto required by the prior art by inserting the entire cup-shaped housing (1) having the appropriate elevation (4) into the cylinder head.
Abstract:
An improved, light weight tappet and method of manufacturing such a tappet. The tappet is comprised of a light weight sleeve to which a hardened disk is metallurgically bonded.
Abstract:
A hydraulic lash adjuster for an internal combustion engine, and a method of its construction is disclosed. The lash adjuster has a cylindrical follower body in which a tubular plunger is slidingly disposed. The plunger cooperates with the follower body to define a high pressure chamber therebetween which is supplied with fluid through a valved port. A low pressure chamber which operates to supply fluid to the high pressure chamber through the valved opening, is defined by an axial passage through the plunger. Fluid flows into and out of the low pressure chamber through a port in the wall of the plunger. Intermediate of the port and the valved opening is a radially inwardly extending annular shelf which is integral formed with the axial passage of the plunger using a mechanical shaving step to plow a portion of the plunger material from the wall of the axially extending passage. The annular shelf operates as a baffle to prevent loss of fluid from the low pressure chamber when the hydraulic lash adjuster is installed at an angle from vertical.
Abstract:
A method for making a direct acting tappet in which an oil groove and interior structure defining a weld interface are formed in a cupshaped body by a rolling process, the body is heat treated, a web and hub structure is positioned against the weld interface and the resulting assembly is subjected to a localized, capacitive discharge welding process in the weld interface area. The weld interface is formed to a specific shape to enhance the integrity of the weld. Further, a baffle member can be assembled to the web and hub structure prior to its positioning within the body member.
Abstract:
A sintered body assembly having an inner section and an outer section is formed from independent inner and outer compacts corresponding to the inner and outer sections, respectively. The inner and outer compacts are so shaped that a predetermined clearance is provided therebetween. The outer compact is larger in shrinkage percentage at the time of sintering than the inner compact such that the clearance is filled by the compacts at the time of sintering thereby allowing the compacts to be formed into a single sintered body or an integral unit.
