Abstract:
The present invention provides an encoding and decoding apparatus used for the compression and expansion of data. A state machine is provided having a plurality of states. Each state has at least one transition pair. Each element of the transition pair comprises zero or more bits representative of the compact code to be output and the identification of the next state to proceed to. The transition pair reflects an output for a yes and no response associated with the probability of the data to be compacted and whether the data falls within that probability.
Abstract:
A two-dimensional shift array for use in image compression VLSI techniques. The present invention utilizes a two-dimensional shift array which provides a significant savings in terms of required silicon area over a conventional implementation.
Abstract:
A system and method for managing the nonvolatile memory capacity of individual workstations within a data processing network having a multiplicity of workstations with resident nonvolatile memory devices. In the context of the embodying network, the invention provides for a selective querying of workstations to determine unused disk capacity, a comparison of such capacity to a threshold defined for the respective workstation, and the generation of an event message indicating sub-threshold capacity. The event is subject to local or network logging, and can include information identifying the workstation and its disk capacity status. A refinement of the invention contemplates the reallocation of disk capacity within the network to avoid premature termination of programs executing on a workstation upon the finding of a sub-threshold capacity in the workstation.
Abstract:
A reproduction method and apparatus provides for the secure reproduction of confidential documents that include image portions formed with magnetic or metallic toners. The method and apparatus of the invention also provides for the production of documents such as statements with checks having bank clearing data formed with magnetic toner, documents containing magnetically bar coded data, and documents recorded with either or both magnetic or nonmagnetic toner that may be distinguished when copied in accordance with a copying criterion established for reproducing secure documents.
Abstract:
An electrosurgical forceps is provided with a shaft that extends from a housing of the electrosurgical forceps. An end effector assembly includes a pair of first and second jaw members pivotably coupled to one another via a pivot pin. One or both of the first and second jaw members may be movable from an open position for positioning tissue therebetween to a clamping position for grasping tissue. A detent is operably disposed proximal the pivot pin and extends radially outward from a proximal flange of one of the jaw members. The detent is configured to releasably engage a corresponding slot disposed on a proximal flange of the other jaw member. The detent and slot are configured to control a gap distance between the first and second jaw members when the first and second jaw members are in the clamping position.
Abstract:
A surgical instrument includes an end effector assembly having first and second jaw members moveable relative to one another between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position for grasping tissue therebetween. In the approximated position, the jaw members cooperate to define a cavity that is configured to house tissue grasped between the jaw members. An injectable material configured for injection into the cavity defined by the jaw members is also provided. The injectable material is configured to substantially surround tissue housed within the cavity. The injectable material is transitionable from a first state, facilitating injection of the injectable material into the cavity, to a second state, wherein the injectable material forms about tissue housed within the cavity to occlude tissue.
Abstract:
A surgical instrument includes an elongated shaft module and a handle module selectively separable from one another. The elongated shaft module includes an elongated shaft member and a pair of jaw members supported at a distal end of the elongated shaft member, at least one of the jaw members moveable relative to the other jaw member between open and closed positions. The handle module includes a housing including an opening extending longitudinally therethrough. The opening is dimensioned to permit passage of the pair of jaw members in the closed position. The handle module also includes a movable handle movable relative to the housing to move the pair of jaw members between open and closed positions, and a lock to secure the elongated shaft module in place within the housing.
Abstract:
An electrosurgical forceps is provided with a shaft that extends from a housing of the electrosurgical forceps. An end effector assembly operably coupled to a distal end of the shaft includes a pair of first and second jaw members each having jaw housing and an electrosurgical seal plate. One or both of the first and second jaw members is movable from an open configuration, to a clamping configuration. The moveable jaw member includes an elongated channel defined in its respective jaw housing and extends along a length thereof. A drive assembly operably couples to the moveable jaw member via a drive rod that is engageable with the elongated channel to move the movable jaw member from the open configuration to the clamping configuration and to provide a closure force between the first and second jaw members when the jaw members are in the clamping configuration.
Abstract:
An end effector assembly having first and second jaw members is provided where one or both of the jaw members is moveable relative to the other between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position for grasping tissue therebetween. One (or both) of the jaw members includes an inwardly-facing surface having a slot defined therein and a wire having an insulative coating. A seal plate has at least one protrusion that is configured to be disposed in the slot. The at least one protrusion of the seal plate is configured to displace the insulative coating from the wire thereby forming an electrical connection therewith when the at least one protrusion is disposed in the slot.
Abstract:
A method for manufacturing an end effector assembly is provided. The method includes grasping a gap-setting gauge between first and second jaw members moveable relative to one another about a pivot between a first, spaced-apart position and a second position proximate tissue and setting the first and second jaw members such that in the approximated position the jaw members cooperate to define a gap distance between the jaw members equivalent to the thickness of the gap-setting gauge such that when positioning tissue between the jaw members full approximation of the jaws is limited to the gap distance.
