摘要: A camera is provided that is capable of exposing films of various speeds comprising a flash unit capable of alternatively assuming a direct flash mode and an indirect flash mode and a film speed detector to determine if the speed of film in the camera is above or below a predetermined speed. According to the invention, a control apparatus connected to the film speed detector and the flash unit prevents the flash unit from assuming one of the flash modes if the film in the camera is below the predetermined speed, but allows the flash unit to assume the other flash mode if the film is below the predetermined speed.

摘要: A thermal printing system is disclosed in which a graphic image composed of a succession of lines having the same number of pixels each is scaled both horizontally and vertically by a factor of approximately 1.5 without altering the size of the pixels. The system disclosed replaces each 2 by 2 set of pixels with a 3 by 3 set of pixels. Each 2 by 2 set consists of two immediately adjacent pixels from the same line and the two immediately adjacent pixels from the next succeeding line. The corner pixels of the 3 by 3 set are identical to the four corner pixels of the 2 by 2 set. The intermediate pixels of the first and third lines have densities equal to the average of the densities of the two corner pixels on the same lines of the same set. The three pixels of the second line of the 3 by 3 set have densities equal to the respective averages of the densities of the pixels immediately adjacent to them in the first and third lines. In this manner, a standard 1024 pixel by 1280 pixel graphic image is transformed into a 1536 by 1920 pixel graphic image. When printed by a thermal printer using a FAX head with 8 dot per millimeter resolution, the resulting image loses substantially nothing of importance in the way of definition and is substantially equal in size to one printed with a standard head with 6 dot per millimeter resolution.

摘要: Is-enthalpic temperature control of the operation of the thermal printing head of a thermal printing device is attained by use of a transfer area at the head to transfer heat from the head to a coolant fluid moved by a fluid mover across the transfer area at a flow rate controlled by a circuit on the basis of a sensor that measures the flow rate of electrical energy being fed to the head, and sensors that sense the mass flow rate of the fluid and its rise in temperature upon flow across the transfer area for determining the flow rate of energy being removed from the head. The circuit controls the fluid mover to adjust the fluid flow rate so that the net energy in the head remains substantially constant.

摘要: The present invention relates to techniques for ensuring that an image receiving sheet, which has only one major surface thereof coated with an image receiving coating, is properly oriented prior to an image being printed thereon. The image receiving sheet has a concave or convex irregularity (e.g., a notch, arc, etc.) formed in at least one nominally straight edge of the sheet. In a first embodiment, a mechanical or optical sensing means detects whether or not the image receiving sheet is stacked correctly in a loading tray by sensing whether or not the edge irregularities are properly positioned. In a second embodiment, an edge and a notch sensing means detect whether or not the image receiving sheet is oriented properly while being fed into the printer. An improperly loaded image receiving sheet is either not fed into the printer, or transits the printer without causing the printer to attempt to print the image thereon. A visual and/or audible alarm can be activated upon the detection of an improperly loaded image receiving sheet to apprise a printer operator of the improperly loaded sheet.

摘要: A compliant head loading mechanism for a thermal printer which in a loaded condition compliantly loads a thermal head against a dye-carrier and a receiver to form a printing nip. The mechanism includes two brackets each of which is pivotably mounted on a fixed pivot shaft. A head loading spring connects the two brackets. The lower bracket has two arms which have holes that receive the pivot shaft. One hole permits only rotational motion of the lower bracket while the other hole is a slot that permits rotational and translation motion of the lower bracket. The slot is tilted to prevent the drag force exerted by the rotating roller against the media (dye-carrier and receiver) from the inducing a twisting moment into the lower bracket.

摘要: A method of making a liquid-crystal sheet material, useful for displays, having polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystals, comprising the steps of providing a emulsion comprising dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal domain and a solution comprising gelatin and a hardening agent, coating said emulsion onto a substrate; and drying said emulsion to form polymer-dispersed liquid-crystal domains dispersed in a continuous matrix comprising hardened gelatin. The invention is also directed to a display having an imaging layer comprising domains of polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid-crystal material dispersed in a continuous matrix comprising hardened gelatin, said imaging layer disposed between first and second conductors. The invention is advantageous in reducing sensitivity to temperature and/or high humidity, especially in thin displays or displays that are open to the environment.
